As footage shot on the Red is digital, does this mean that it needs to be sharpened in post in the same way that all digital stills need to be?

Not really the same situation but you can always dial in some sharpening if you really want it.

Has nothing to do with digital, but the RED is doing no internal sharpening whatsoever (most video cameras do).
So, a bit of unsharp masking (which is highly adjustable) can't hurt, but some just like the softness of the RED footage as it is – less harsh than video.

Uli is correct. The RED does NO in camera sharpening, but instead left it to the user's taste. I generally put a .2 sharpen on everything 4K in Color and more as needed in 3K or 2K footage.

The sharpening can just make it pop.
