Renaming RED files in FCP

Could anyone please tell me what the rules are for renaming a file in FCP - so that one can retain the ability of the file to automatically link back to the original file.

For instance A001_C003_1109WX_S001 is not a very useful name when editing.
Better if we could read 5-1 c_u Girls Face

I seem to recall reading that it's possible to lose some of the boring original number but I'm not sure which bit.

Thanks.

[Godfrey Pye] "so that one can retain the ability of the file to automatically link back to the original file."

If you really want to be able to link back in any situation, then never rename your files. This goes for any tapeless format, not just Red.

You have something like 4 different browser columns in FCP for notes. Not to mention separate columns for scene, shot and take numbers. This is what they're for.

definitely- as long as you rename in one of the alternate columns and never the actual clip name, you'll be ok. Then you just resort the columns to highlight your new names.

Thanks for that, in all these years it never actually entered my mind.
Makes sense when you are made aware though - duh!
