Hi, I was wondering is it possible to lift stills from 4k RED or say Phantom HD and use them for print ads or billboards? I am not to sure of the resolution needed and perhaps the shutter speeds. Has anyone done anything like this?

Sure- there have been many magazine covers, print ads and more done with the RED. Not sure I'd go as far as a billboard though- that might be better done with a higher megapixel count still camera. With RED you're shooting a 12 megapixel frame.

Michael,

I just finished a gallery shoot using the RED as a high speed stills camera. The jury is still out as to how large the stills can be printed, however I can give you some tips as to our on set workflow. We rated the camera at 160 ISO, viewed in RAW mode at all times, used a 1/120th shutter and . . . this is the big one . . . . shot almost everything in portrait mode i.e. camera on its side! This is to maximize the vertical resolution of our images which were all of models.

Hope this helps . . . I'm not sure Noah really understood your need for practical information.

Here's a link to footage from Alexx Henry and Greg Williams RED shoots with some additional info:

How about the DPI?
What DPI do you get to for Photoshop and printing?
