Which blackmagic - RED easysetup to use on my RED job?
on Sep 29, 2009 at 1:22:56 pm

Hello all.
I hope someone can advise me on this. I have just purchased a new dual 2.66ghz quadcore mac-pro
with 8gb ram and ati 4870 graphics as well as a decklink multibridge pro2 and G-tech g-speed espro xl 12TB raid storage.
All of this hardware has been bought to edit a short film shot on RED. The footage is being shot at both 4k 16x9 25frames and 4k 2:1 25 frames with a couple of shots at 2k 50frames. I have downloaded the latest software for the multibridge pro2 and I was going to use one of their easy setup options to configure the project but I am not sure which one to use. We want to transcode the rushes to prores 4:4:4:4 as we have been told the raid can handle it.

Here is a list of the choices of blackmagic easy setup options:

Blackmagic 2K 1024P 25 - RED with Apple ProRes (HQ)
Blackmagic 2K 1080P 25 - 10 BIT RGB 4:4:4
Blackmagic 2K 1080P 25 - Apple ProRes 4444
Blackmagic 2K 1152P 25 - RED with apple ProRes 4444
Blackmagic 2K 1556P 25 - 10Bit RGB 4:4:4
Blackmagic 2K 1556P 25 - Apple ProRes 4444

I would appreciate any advice on this matter

Well if you're transcoding there's no reason to use one of the RED codecs presets- use the ProRes one that matches your frame rate and resolution. And they're just presets, you can easily change things up to match your exact footage.

Have you read the FCS whitepaper yet? There's nothing wrong with transcoding to ProRes 4444 for all of your dailes but it's not the only workflow out there.

Hi Noah
Thanks for responding thought you'd like to know
I have ordered your book from amazon and I'm in
the process of reading the RED fcp whitepaper right
now. But if you think there is a particular setup
that would suit the footage please let me know.
We are hoping to grade the footage on the same mac pro
and we will be laying off to HDCAM SR and also making
a 35mm film print.

Also I am a bit confused about the differences between the 1152p
and the 1556p options I assume they are different resolutions for
different red footage ie 4k, 3k, 2k is that correct?.

Yes it depends whether you shot 4K 16:9, HD or 2:1.

I think there is going to be a combination of 16x9
and 2:1 media but I don't know what the ratio is going
to be.

Sounds like you need to have a major sit down with your director and DP and settle that question pronto. Unless you want to crop footage or see intermittent letterboxing from shot to shot, you do not want to mix 16:9 and 2:1 on one project.

Ok I have just spoken to the DOP and Director who have
decided to film almost all footage at 4K 16:9 with a couple
of slomo shots at 2K 16:9. I can't see much in the ED FCP
whitepaper about working with 16:9 though??.

That's good. Are they shooting the actual 16:9 mode or the HD mode? I'd suggest the HD mode, especially if this is destined for HD and DVD. HD reduces mathematically perfectly 1:1 to 1920x1080 so less processor overhear. 16:9 mode is a bit more of a resize.

It's really not a big deal getting the ingest settings right in FCP, if you're logging and transferring it will come across into a 2K proxy to match whatever your camera format is. But it helps to nail it down with the crew.

Yeah so you'll be fine- log and transfer to your ProRes flavor of choice. When you drop the first clip into the timeline, accept the autoconform and then setup for the Kona output.

This will lose the ability to grade RAW in Color but that's not the end of the world, especially if it's not for a film out. And you can gain that back by using Clipfinder or the CinemaTools method described in the FCS whitepaper that comes with the RED FCS plugin.

"and then setup for the Kona output."

I assume you mean blackmagic as I have a blackmagic multibridge pro2..

Right I meant 'x-video card that connects to your broadcast monitor' output settings.

Your book turned up today looks like I've got some reading to do.
But after a brief flick through I've gotta say I'm impressed.
