AVID 1080p DNx 175 23.98 out of RedRushes > 29.97 1080i?!

Hello RED friends,

I have a client who wants me to convert 83GB worth of RED 2k & 4K footage into AVID 1080 DNx 175 29.97 but it was all shot at 23.98 SO i am wondering what the best way to do this would be. I would start with RedRushes to do the initial conform but then I still need to get the clips from 1080p 23.98 to 29.97!

I need to have some way of providing the time code info as well in case it is lost in my method of delivering a drive with the conformed / transcoded footage.

any thoughts on how to do this?

thanks

Sean

Should cut at 23.98 and do the 3:2 pulldown at the end of editing...

I agree with Noah. Do not destroy your 23.98 (it is our universal frame rate for all kinds of deliverables). Offline everything in 23.98, then output to any 29.97 SD or 59.94 HD straight from the online system. Or do the 3:2 pulldown in software, like Noah says, before mastering.

I much rather let the system do the pulldown realtime while going to tape.

Hello,

thank you both for your responses and believe you me this what we told the client but for the fact that they are on old school avid systems they are requesting the footage delivered as such.

I was able to convince the client to let me just layoff to hdcam sr master and let fcp perform the pull-down on the fly - adding 1 frame slates at the head of each clip for them to have TC.

cheers

Sean

Deja Vu!

I experienced the same predicament earlier this year while working on a show for the History / Discovery Channels. The offline house had very old Avid systems with older editors that freaked out about pull-downs or anything that wasn't 29.97 on Betacam SP. Even after explaining about the modern times in great detail, no one believed me.

Maybe if I looked over 50 they would have :)
Who knows....

Yeah it is a shame how much perfectly ready to edit RAW 4K 23.98 footage gets blasted into 1080p HDCAM or worse because of old systems and thinking in place...
