ClipFinder VS. RedRushes !?
on Aug 25, 2009 at 7:57:16 pm

Hey gang,

I am conforming 2k, 3k, & 4k Red footage into 1920x1080 Full Quality HQ clips and for the very first time i wanted to try to use ClipFinder for this massive batch of renders split between 2 new MacPro systems with the files all living on a SAN.

SO i know many of you folks recommend using ClipFinder over RedRushes BUT i just setup bug renders on 2 brand new macpro's with tons of RAM fully updated etc and it seems that ClipFinder is barely even moving.

I just did a test using RedRushes which I have only used up to this point performing the same renders and its going WAY faster?!

I am not sure if I'm doing something wrong but for both apps I chose to use the most ram & tasks as possible.

Any thoughts?

cheers

Sean

Sounds like ClipFinder might be setup for a full debayer while RedRushes is set to a half debayer. Check your settings.

Nope Both are set to FULL and RedRushes is going WAY faster - I dont even think ClipFinder is done with its first set of 16!!

I am def bummed out because you guys have all said how great it is and I do have to admit the interface is great (showing resolution and frame rates etc) BUT what can I do this stuff needs to be ready first thing in the morning for review.

What else could be causing it to run at a crawl like this? I also notice that i literally cant do anything n the comp's that have it running - like clicking on a finder or anything it just beach balls off and on - it really must be using all the cores but unfortunately no results...

Do you want to post some screen shots of your setting?

Right now you're trying to process 16 different clips with each using 8 cores. Try changing that do something like 2-4 tasks and 2-4 cores/tasks. Open the activity monitor to see if the processors are being used efficiently.

Ok well my question to that would be about the fact that In RedRushes I am able to have 6 tasks using all 8 cores and it seems to work fine...so even if I cut down the tasks why do I want to use less cores?? Ideally On a New MacPro with lot so fRAM what will get the best / fastest results?

thanks so much for your time on this one Russell

For comparison, try matching the settings you have in REDRushes. See how it goes.

hmm ok so 6 tasks and 8 cores?! One thing I DID notice was that as i mentioned earlier in this post - the comp running Clip basically cannot respond in ANY way when its running its batch whereas i can still use internet mouse around in finder etc with RedRushes - have you or anyone else noticed that?

It's about general throughput as well. If you have two fast RAIDs and are reading from one and writing to the other, the situation is very different from having one single drive.

Hey Uli,

SO at this facility we have a SAN with 70TB (now down to 30 currently) each station connected via Fibre - I am going from and to the SAN for these renders...does that help inform the situation any better?

Yes. Go for all cores then.
