down convert to SD
on Jun 11, 2009 at 4:59:15 pm

I'm working in ProRes 422 HQ 2048x1152 every method I try to down convert to SD the picture quality is really dying specifically in the blacks. Other then finishing to a HD tape having that converted to digi beta does any one have a method of down conversion that is holding up?

Thx
Phil

This is a reminder of an important fact.

SD and HD are TWO different COlor spaces and a CC pass needs to be done for each color space. It is not "one size fits all"

What are you using to down convert?

Ive tried letting final cut do it and I've gone through compressor with pretty much the same result.

If you have a Kona 3, have you tried using that to downconvert it? You could also bring it into Color and make any adjustments you need, then render it out as SD.

Suggestion if using FCP

Place the HD in an SD sequence,

Apply a three way CC filter to the sequence.

Adjust the filter to display accurate color bars in SD.

Render out, this is the quick and dirty way to get a semi accurate output.

Never, ever use final cut pro for down conversion unless aliasing
and artifacts is ok.

you can use compressor, but be sure and change the resize
filter to best quality...otherwise...you guessed it...aliasing and artifacts.

Kona does an even better job.
