Hey Guys:

i bought an aja Hd10C2 miniconverter to downconvert the Hd Sdi signal so that we can mount an ordinary (component/composite)monitor on our crane.
It never worked. has anyone done this with this converter or any other. im gonna send it back and buy the Marshall V-lcd70p-Hdmi-Pm 7" Lcd Field Monitor.

What do you think about this monitor?

And has anyone used this converter on on the Red One and got it to work ? if so please help

I would double check the dip switches on the converter and I would made sure that you are outputting the correct signal to the HD-SDI of the RED ONE.

we tested every output version of the RED, and messed with the dip switches till my fingers hurt.

What a tough shooting day. bought the converter thinking it was a sure bet but.................

totally screwed my crane shots.
my biz partners say HD/SD SDI conversion to component will be a different signal from straight HD SDI to component but how .

I just dont get it

Bummer.

I bought a 50ft HDMI cable and a cheapo monitor as a back up for this kind of situation.

I think that Marshals are very well regarded monitors and they are an industry standard. The marshall will mount nicely for jib use and can be used as a mini client monitor on other shoots.

You can also buy a 10ft version of the RED LCD cable for smaller jib stuff and use the RED LCD for that.

HDI-SDI might be a better way to go for the longer jibs.

i bought the converter, thinking i have tones of monitors available but i guess i sudda just bought the monitor and used the HDMI out. but That itself (HDMI out) does not work with all HDMI monitors.

Seems the HDMI out of the RED actually has a DVI signal coming out of it. so u usually get an off centered image on the monitor. but this can be fixed by changing the scan rate to 50hz.

boy oh boy.

Have you tried the Element Technica breakout box? That does the trick for us:

Noah,

That BOB only converts to standard connections. It doesn't do any downconversion.

but I believe that this one from SIM Video does.

That is more of a one stop solution.

See the power cable coming off of it?

That is the power to the downconverter. GIve them a call on Monday, they are very helpful and they are the authorized RED service center in Toronto.

thanks Noah but that one does not downconvert to SD of anykind. even if its just a signal so we can frame a shot on our little 15ft jib, i'll be happy.

The RED One is quite specific regarding it's output signals.

– It generates true progressive signals, not PSF, like many others do. Quite a few converters and I/O cards don't accept such a signal.

– If you send the picture only, it will output 1280 by 720, which should be accepted by most monitors. But if you include the additional camera information around it, the format will be between 1080 and 720 HDTV standards and will not be accepted by most broadcast devices. Most computer screens – but not all of them – will accept this signal via an HDMI to DVI cable.

Hope this helps,

Uli

OK, Uli:

So lets see, how do out get the picture alone out. because the the adapter i bought should work but its not. We tried every conceivable option in the camera and converter.

[Uli Plank] "– It generates true progressive signals, not PSF, like many others do. Quite a few converters and I/O cards don't accept such a signal. "

That is not an issue with the live video tap as that is always 720p and there is no "PsF" in 720 it is always P.

the HDMI is only a display signal on the RED not a video signal- so you will need a monitor that supports HDMI as a Display standard ( note that some HDMI monitors ONLY support SMPTE signals)

Sorry Nigel..

the HD10C2 is an Analog to Digital converter.

the HD10MD3 is the down converter.

Re: converters

too much alcohol Gary?

The HD10C2 is a serial digital to analog converter -
http://www.aja.com/pdf/support/manuals_conv/AJA_manual_HD10C2.pdf

To ALL OF YOU - read the F#$%@#$ manual

If you have a composite standard def video monitor-
set DIP SWITCH 2 to CMPSTE.

The HD10C2 will accept these signals -
Formats 1080i @ 50/59.94/60 Hz
1080p sf @ 23.98/24/25/29.97/30 Hz (displayed as
interlaced)
1035i @ 59.94/60 Hz
720p @ 59.94/60 Hz
525i @ 59.94 Hz
625i @ 50 Hz

the composite video for your montior comes out of the "green" cable in the break out cable.

bob Zelin
ps - you do your tests back at home, or in your shop, not on the crane. I don't care how busy you are, or how behind schedule you are - you do these tests back at home, not on the crane.

[Bob Zelin] "To ALL OF YOU - read the F#$%@#$ manual "

Sorry Bob

I do not need the manual for this one - the 10c2 will not take a HD video tap and make it SD-

This is a Digital to Analog converter ONLY -- it does not have a DC built in.

I have one and use it regularly....
