Gamma shift when editing in FCP
on May 14, 2009 at 6:11:52 pm

I suspect this is a much discussed topic - but despite that - after an hour of searching this and other forums - I cannot find either an explanation or solution I understand!

Transcoding RED footage into ProRes 422 (HQ) exactly as described in the RED whitepaper. When viewing the resulting clips in FCP, they are darker when at rest, and when playing - the gamma shifts and they become brighter. What's going on here? And which is the 'correct' look.

Have tried selecting and deselecting the gamma shift option in Quicktime's General preferences - with no change.

Note that I do not have a AJA or Kona card or anything. This edit is purely for web and I am simply using the Apple display.

Thankyou in advance for your wise words of wisdom.
