FCP & RED workflow
on Apr 27, 2009 at 2:03:56 pm

I am soon to edit a Documentary in FCP which will be shot primarily using RED. Although a UK production, and delivered on PAL, all the archival material will be NTSC. I am therefore wondering if I would not be best having them shoot at 23.98, and editing 23.98 also. Can anyone confirm that this would be the sensible way to go?
Thanks
Jinx Godfrey

If you are editing for European HDTV, you'll probably just upspeed to 25 fps, right?

So it's up to you if you do that before or after editing, as long as you are editing in ProRes. I've never tried if upspeeding native clips is stableā€¦

Apart from that, I'd decide the workflow based on how you add your sound.

Probably best to shoot the RED at 25p, and for archive material remove the pulldown and speed up to 25p with Cinema Tools conform option.

Another solution -far superior than any software conversion- would be to organize all the NTSC footage and us a hardware based formats converter such as Teranex to convert all the NTSC 29.97 to PAL 25.

The results will be MAGNIFICENT!
