WINDOWSEATpictures Makes the Evolution and Transition from Standard Definition Mixed Media to HD.
WINDOWSEATpictures, El Segundo, CA. March 6, 2009-The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, held each winter on the North Shore of Oahu, is recognized across the globe as the premier surfing event. Professional surfers, fans, and media gather for the awesome winter swells that travel to the Hawaiian islands. With the high caliber of athleticism found both at the event and the free surf at many of the local spots, it is no wonder cameras of every shape and size can be found dotting the beaches.
WINDOWSEATpictures has been producing the event for television since 2004- directed by Bill Kiely. They have always blended media both still and motion to create one of a kind experiences that are televised for fans around the world. WINDOWSEATpictures first teamed up with RED in 2007 on a project with Apple. The RED One's camera capabilities and high definition picture quality were beyond their expectations. They then decided they would add the element of the RED One camera as the Official Water Camera for the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing television shows.
Determining to use the RED One was just the beginning of their transition to an all High-Definition production. Up until this year, the shows had been shot in standard definition digital video with beta-cam, Super 16-mm and Super 8-mm film transfered to DigiBeta. "We had to not only transition our equipment to High Definition, but we had to also convince our clients of the benefit of this progression to HD. We then had work out network deals so that the shows would air in HD," says Moz Mirbaba, WINDOWSEATpictures' Executive Producer, "Ultimately, the entire company was transitioned to HD-capable Final Cut Pro work stations for post production."
Once WINDOWSEATpictures had everyone on board, they had only one final challenge. Director of Water Cinematography Mike Prickett had previously been shooting WINDOWSEATpictures' water footage on Super 16mm film. The RED One was the best digital substitute for film's cinematic quality, with its variable frame rates and 35mm sensor. Prickett was familiar with the RED One from the 2007 production with Apple, RED, and WINDOWSEATpictures. Prickett had a custom-made water housing designed for the RED One so he could shoot the water footage from a jet ski. It was through the experimentation from 2007 with the RED that Prickett discovered what equipment was needed to perfect shooting from water.
The RED One is relatively new to the world of high resolution digital cinematography, being released only in 2007. It was quickly adopted by the independent and Hollywood filmmaking communities due to the quality imagery it creates and at a fraction of the price of lesser cameras. This is why it is being used by directors like Steven Soderbergh, Alex Proyas, and Dean Devlin, and on many new releases this year such as "My Bloody Valentine" and the upcoming “Knowing” Starring Nicholas Cage that hits theaters in Mid March. The long running NBC television show from creator John Wells “ER” has moved to RED, his new show for NBC entitled “Southland” is shooting RED, and many more TV shows are now shooting RED worldwide including Dean Devlin’s “Leverage” on TNT and “The Tracey Ullman” show for Showtime. The Red One camera shoots at 4k, 3k or 2k depending on user preference. When combined with it's variable frame rates capability, The RED one creates dazzling and clear imagery. However, the real thing of beauty is not only the RED's amazing picture quality, but also it's availability to nearly all filmmakers on any budget. RED has made it equally affordable for all filmmakers to have high quality footage for a fraction of the costs involved with shooting 35-mm film.

WINDOWSEAT is paying close attention to RED as it works on it's next camera, the Scarlett. At 1/4 the size of the RED One and with the ability to shoot 3k and 2k, as well as variable frame rates, the Scarlett, and the WINDOWSEATpictures team should reach all new heights in action sports footage.
The 2008 Vans Triple Crown events will air in the Spring of 2009 on FUEL TV and RUSH HD respectively.
