RED FCP setup
on Jan 20, 2009 at 3:54:52 pm

Hi again.
I´m trying to follow the RED whitepaper to setup a sequence in FCP but
I need 16:9 PAL 25p. Should I use 2048x1152 resolution?

If you shot at 4K 16x9, then Log and Transfer will bring in the footage at 2048x1152, so set up your sequence for that.

If you shot 4K HD, Log and Transfer should bring it in at 1920x1080. I haven't tried it though, but that's what it should do.

Actually the dpx for delivery is going to be 1080p.
I have never recieved Red footage before so I need to be prepared when I recieve it.
What do you mean by "4k HD"? I thought 4k was 4k.

[Göran Thorén] "What do you mean by "4k HD"? I thought 4k was 4k. "

4k is 4k.... unless it's 4k 2:1, 4k 16x9, or 4k HD... :)

The RED camera can record at different frame sizes:

4k 2:1 = 4096x2048
4k 16x9 = 4096x2302
4k HD = 3840x2160

The FCP Log and Transfer tool cuts all of these resolutions in half. The Kona 3 will output any of these FCP frame sizes to 1080P in realtime, which makes dealing with this stuff really easy.

Thank´s Russ!
Good thing I have a kona3 card!

Could you please briefly go through the workflow?
I have read the whitepaper and it seems It just focused on NTSC and 24p stuff.
I need to figure out the PAL way.
Ingesting the footage, what would be a good way? As native or ProRes?
Sequence setup?
I also need to get the finnished edit out to dpx without grading.

So I get the 4k R3d files, now what? :)

So everywhere it says (framerate) insert 25p

but without knowing if your content was shot as 24, 23.98 or 25 changes everything.

I re-read the doc and do not see anything that is specific to any frame rates, the fastest easiest way to handle the footage is using FCP's L&T function to ProRes when going for an HD only delivery.

Uh....

you forgot the anamorphic (ANA) settings in there now also.

Oh.... um.... and ANA setting... with Build 18 it looks like. Haven't tried that one yet. Gary, have you seen how it looks?

Ok, it is going to be shot at 25p, 16:9.
Is this a good workflow:

Ingest ProRes
Sequence resolution:2048x1152
EditExport XML from FCP
Import XML to Crimson
Export DPX 1920x1080 from Crimson

actually the ANA settings have been there since build 16, it is only with 18 the the output is correctly output with the correct aspect you have chosen.

and Yes I like it alot, but then there is not much anamorphic shot in the midwest.

I'll have to track down an anamorphic lens and try it out.
