Red Camera Package Options

Hey,

Wanted to get your guys opinion on the best accessories to get with the red one camera, IE: essential items and what not to bother with or get 3rd party, specifically have questions on:
x
View Finder - are most people just using the monitor or are they buying the viewfinder / is it worth getting the viewfinder?

Nikon mount? For everyday use is it worth getting the Nikon mount and using the still camera lenses? Then maybe renting / buying a set of Zeiss/cookes for bigger projects?

In other words is it worth spending the money on the 18mm to 50mm? How is the quality of the red lens? Is it better to save the money and go with the nikon lenses & for special shoots rent or pick up some used 35 mm film lenses?

Hard Drive - is it worth getting it or is it better to just go with the cards (solid state vs platters flying) specially for high hand held movement? Are the CF RED cards faster or better then regular CF cards you can buy anywhere?

Right and left handed grips - for shooting is it worth buying both? Does it work ok as a rig for shooting? How does the camera work with steadicam or any other standard rigs?

Anyway just had a few questions and wanted to hear from people experienced with the camera.

Thanks in advance!

Well, a few opinions from my side after 2 months with the camera:

View Finder: good! The best thing next to an optical viewfinder.

"Nikon mount? For everyday use is it worth getting the Nikon mount and using the still camera lenses? Then maybe renting / buying a set of Zeiss/cookes for bigger projects? "

Use PL lenses if you are into serious movies. You can't switch easily between Nikon and PL anyway.

"In other words is it worth spending the money on the 18mm to 50mm? How is the quality of the red lens? Is it better to save the money and go with the nikon lenses & for special shoots rent or pick up some used 35 mm film lenses? "

The optical quality of the 18-50mm is very good, mechanically it's so and so. It's well worth the price. Rent other PL lenses when you need them, the second-hand market is drained.

"Hard Drive - is it worth getting it or is it better to just go with the cards (solid state vs platters flying) specially for high hand held movement? "

It's good for hand-held, only very strong vibrations (think helicopter or sports-car with very hard suspension) can cause problems.

"Are the CF RED cards faster or better then regular CF cards you can buy anywhere?"

Only Lexar 300x UDMA or Red's are fast enough.

"Right and left handed grips - for shooting is it worth buying both? Does it work ok as a rig for shooting?"

No. Get better ones with a wider bar, Ronford & Baker or some small Danish company make some.

"How does the camera work with steadicam or any other standard rigs?"

Like any other heavy cinema camera...

Hope this helps,
