Sony Movie Studio & Quicktime

I read online recently that Windows users should uninstall Quicktime for security reasons, so I did.

But Movie Studio doesn't work without it.

What should I do?

(Apologies if this is old news/has been asked before - not terribly technical)

Where did you read that?
It is an Aplle product so I think it is safe.

It was all over the place at the start of 2016.

I can't find it anywhere on the Apple site. But I see that there are no security updates, so I think to only reason you should remove QuickTime is to prevent hackers. Do you have Java? Maybe that works?

I'll try that. Just couldn't open projects I'd used before because the media wouldn't work. I'll play around with it, cheers.

Movie Studio works fine even without Quicktime being installed. Only drawback is you won't be able to import certain flavor of Quicktime files like (MOV) DNxHD or ProRes.

Yes, it's MOV I usually use - that would explain the problem. Some experimenting needed. Cheers

[Michael McIntosh] "What should I do?"
Here are four (4) things you can do:

  1. Reinstall QuickTime because you need it to work with MOV files in Movie Studio.

  2. Ignore the fear mongers who love to report on vulnerabilities because they sell anti-virus software.

  3. Windows has more vulnerabilities than QuickTime... maybe you should uninstall that too?

  4. Buy a Mac and stop worrying

#1 of those four will clearly fix your problem (the others are optional). ;-)

Well... 1 out of 4 isn't bad. lol :-D

To be clear about the threat. No one has seen an exploit yet. In theory, someone could create a video that exploits the vulnerability and do unknown things to your computer but you would have to download and play the malicious video for that to happen. As long as you are only using QuickTime with Movie Studio, you are pretty safe.

Why not do a custom install of QT. Just install the 'Essentials'.

You need the whole thing for Vegas Pro to work. Even if you just rename the QuickTime Player.exe it doesn't work. Vegas Pro needs the QuickTime Player for some reason.
