Empty Audio Tracks with Multi Channel Audio
on Feb 25, 2016 at 12:09:17 pm

I want to make a video with multi channel audio (2 stereo tracks). When playing the timeline the audio channels sounds properly. When playing the rendered file, you don't hear any sound at all. Importing this file in VP, the the timeline shows 4 empty audio tracks. This applies to the Sony HD EX 1280x720-50p (mxf) templates as well for the Quicktime HD 720-25 Avid DNxHD 40 8 bit (mov) template.

For the Audio Device, MultiChannel and Render-setting and the Media Info see the attached screenshots.

Making a video with surround sound however, goes simply well. Also multichannel audiofiles (wav, w64) made with SoundForge go well.
I've tried everything, but the problem remains the same. No sound!

What am I doing wrong?

First, audio for video should be at 48K not 44.1K so your project properties are wrong.

Second, you need 4 buses, not 2, to get 4 channels of audio in your output.

Finally, it looks like you didn't map your channels which is why you're not getting any audio. Follow my tutorial on how to do this correctly:

Thanks for your reaction John.

I will set the sample frequency to 48KHz.

About the number of busses: In the project properties the talk about the number of stereo busses. In my project I have 2 stereo tracks. That's wy I set it to 2. If I remember correctly, in your tutorial mono tracks are used. If 4 busses are needed, how do I make the mapping of the 2 stereo tracks because output 1 and output 2 are coupled. Moreover, when playing the timeline, sound comes through the right channels.

For channel mapping see Mixing Console picture. Is this o.k.?

If you want to use 2 stereo buses instead of 4 mono that's ok, just make sure that in the render template you map channels 1 & 2 to bus A, and 3 & 4 to bus B.

Hi John, I have checked everything and also tried it with a new laptop (Windows 10) and a fresh install of VP13, but still no sound. And as mentioned earlier, playing it from theĀ  timeline goes well.

As multichannel audio device I'm using a Focusrite 2i4 USB audio interface.
Is there anyone who has experience with multi-channel audio using such a device?

[Harry Maathuis] "Is there anyone who has experience with multi-channel audio using such a device?"
Just so we are clear... this has nothing to do with your audio device. I can create an 8 channel audio file with just my stereo laptop. This is about creating buses, routing tracks to buses, and then mapping buses to channels during the render. If you follow my tutorial, it should work.

Try it with mono channels like I did and see if that makes a difference.
