I honestly don't know how to title this...
on Feb 7, 2016 at 1:38:13 am

Hi. I am fairly new to the whole Sony Vegas thing and I have a question. Please forgive me if I use incorrect terminology

Let's say I have a background video with a resolution of 1920x1080
like this

http://imgur.com/tPiwOUg

and then I add another video on-top with a smaller resolution like this

http://imgur.com/tPiwOUg

I want to position the video on top in a way where part of it is poking its way in from the side of the frame like this, but I cant, because it gets cut off in the center and I can't move it to the edge. How can I fix this without making the video all stretched and distorted? I simply want to move a video clip slightly off frame.

Apply a chroma key filter to the the green screen video, this will matte out the green.

Then use the pan and crop utility to rotate and size the green screen video the way you want it to look. If you zoom out with the scroll wheel while in the pan crop tool, you should see a circle that you can control the rotation.

In this photo I've made it a little bit more clear.

When I try to move Shia Lebouf off screen to the blue area so just his torso shows and his legs are off screen he gets cut off in the area i circled in red.

This only happens when I use footage that is a smaller resolution then the background footage. When I use footage that is 1920x1080p just like the background this problem doesn't arise.

Hi,
Based on the image album the third image with the green screen turned sideways. To fix this.
Go back to Vegas and right click in the event/ pan crop and choose restore. This will put things back to the original position. Next, find the track motion button located to the left of the screen where the video and audio sliders are. Use the track motion to rotate the green screen image, place it where you wish it to appear and adjust the size to taste. Hope that helps.

On the green screen file, from the pan crop utility chose a drop down preset for 16x9. This should crop the image to match the 1080 project file. Once you have the crop applied, you can resize the image, and should be able to move it near the edge like you need. making sure constrain aspect is enabled, when you are trying to resize the image again.

Alternative also would be to use the pan&crop on the green screen footage, then use the track motion to move and size the image at the track level. This would require dedicating a track to the clip, and what you are doing with it.

Use Track Motion. Wherever you want to positions something, use Track Motion and nothing will ever get cut off.

Thanks a bunch everyone. Using tracked motion fixed my issue. Looking back on this post I'm surprised you understood what my issue even was. Apparently I'm really bad at explaining things. :P

The key for me was that you wanted to move the frame and it was getting cut off. That tells me you are probably using PanCrop when you should be using Track Motion. ;-)

Glad that got it working the way you wanted.
