Sony Vegas Pro 11 crashes with Windows 10 update
on Jan 14, 2016 at 8:23:35 pm

I recently updated to Windows 10 but now I can only do one or two edits on Sony Vegas Pro 11.0 and then it crashes. My Sony AVC custom template has also disappeared and it won't render on any setting. Everything on Sony Vegas worked great on Windows 8 but I don't want to roll back to it. My email server stopped working on it and I spent the entire day yesterday trying to get it to work. Even the Windows support team couldn't help. It now works on Windows 10. Please help! I'm very frustrated and can't find any solutions online.

Thanks!

Susan

If it were me, I would roll back to Windows 8 then. Sony Vegas Pro 11 should work with Windows 10, but the fact that it took a day to get email working, which is a trivial application to support is an indication that the upgrade of the OS had some issues that will keep haunting you. Technically it sounds like Vegas is running, but it is likely a driver issue causing the crash. For me there was no compelling reason to upgrade a working system to Windows 10 as most of the new features are to benefit Microsoft rather than myself. The license agreement stated I could no longer connect to my desktop from an RDP client on the iPhone and that I could only connect once every 90 days remotely, otherwise I should own Windows Server. I would run Windows 10 on a new system or on a system I was already troubleshooting problems on.

If you insist on staying on Windows 10, then I recommend checking the Sony support site for how to do a clean uninstall/reinstall like mentioned here:
https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5151/~/clean-uninstall-a...

You may need to turn off GPU acceleration if there are video driver issues with Windows 10. Windows 10 preview actually had some major issues with NVidia that they later corrected. The main problem in Windows 10 is you cannot control the updates and your system may update while working on a project and that may cause you to miss a deadline with the project as Microsoft and the video card vendor figure things out. I'm not saying that you should never apply updates, but if you had a deadline of tomorrow, you would like to have the freedom to not perform the update until the weekend.

What version of Vegas Pro 11.0 are you on, are you running the last build?

Have you run all the windows updates including any optional ones having to do with .net?

Is GPU enabled or disabled under preferences?

Verify your GPU driver is up to date from NV or AMD.

Verify your Audio device driver is the latest from the manufacturer.

Right click on Start > Device Manager - make sure you have no ! devices listed.

Right click on Start > Admin Command Prompt - "sfc /scannow" will verify your windows core files for problems.

There really is very little difference between Win8 and 10, so Vegas should work well in either version. Upgrading will not install the latest device drivers for hardware, it will only load compatible drivers.

Historically, Windows upgrade in place has been a horror story. I know Microsoft encourages this with Windows 10 but it seems to be hit or miss. It sounds like yours was a miss. :(

If you really want to use Windows 10, I would strongly recommend that you perform a clean install of the OS. Otherwise, you will always have problems.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I decided to upgrade to Sony Vegas Pro 13 and now everything is working beautifully. I was meaning to upgrade anyway to get better 4K support etc, and so it's all working well so far.

That's the right approach Susan. If you upgrade your OS.... Also upgrade
your software.

[Steve Rhoden] "If you upgrade your OS.... Also upgrade your software."
+1

That's always good advice. Windows 10 did not even exist when Vegas Pro 11 came out so it's not officially supported although is should probably work on a fresh install but upgrading your applications when upgrading your OS is always a good idea for maximum compatibility.

My Windows 10 upgrade was a nightmare. I discovered hardware older than 2012 seemed to have driver issues. They often did work but were extremely unstable or performed extremely poorly.

My theory is that if you want Windows 10, get it with new hardware for maximum sociability and compatibility.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, GTX570, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

True, older softwares will still work, but performs poorly!
