Magewell XL 100 D HDMI Capture to Sony Vegas 12 ??
on Dec 28, 2015 at 10:16:45 pm

Have spent most of the day trying to acquire info about capturing from the Magewell XL 100 D to Sony Vegas 12, in fact called B&H in New York (Pro video department..) associate says Sony Vegas can Capture from that device, but would not go into much detail about it, told me to go to Youtube where I have spent hours. Really not enough detail for us.
I have read the posts from the Forum, still would like more detail on getting HDMI into Vegas. Appreciate your input, thanks. Cornerstone Productions LLC, Florida

[Blayde Stone] "Have spent most of the day trying to acquire info about capturing from the Magewell XL 100 D to Sony Vegas 12"
What have you tried? What hasn't worked?

As far as I know, the Vegas Pro HD capture utility was designed to work with Firewire and not USB 3.0 so I don't believe that Vegas Pro will be able to capture from that device which is probably why B&H couldn't tell you how. You may need to use other capture software that works with USB webcams. Maybe try VirtualDub and see if that works.

That card is not a USB device, its a PCIe card. Couple things to try but they may or may not be helpful. I have no experience with that manufacturer.
  • Do you have the card installed in the correct PCie slot that does not compete/share bandwidth with the GPU, USB3, or other high bandwidth width devices? Is the slot the device is plugged into the same operating speed as the card?

  • Does the card come with its own configuration software and capture application? Blackmagic's marketing makes their cards sound like they will play well in windows, but in fact pretty much work best with their software. Magewell may have a similar thing going. Capturing with Magewell software, and then bringing that footage into Vegas may be the way to go.

  • Does the video interface appear as a video selectable device in apps like Skype? This will confirm that windows is seeing the driver.

  • With my Blackmagic device there are 2 separate places to configure the video hardware. One is the control panel application, where you need to specify the video format correctly as the device does not auto recognize the video format. The other place is inside the BM capture application, and the video formats need to match in both places. I am offering this because the Magewell device may need to be set to exactly the video format you are feeding it.

If you need to return the device, consider an Osprey card, as their drivers are very robust and work well with Vegas Vidcap. Blackmagic is good too, but the Osprey drivers do a better job of auto negotiating signals on an input.

Sony Vidcap only does uncompressed capture, where as a capture program like the one Blackmagic supplies will compress captured media on the fly.

Good luck.

What makes you think it's a PCIe card? Everything I've read says that the Magewell XL 100 D is a USB device.

I believe Sony VidCap is SD only not HD.

Well I was off one letter on the product number. When I looked it up, I came up with the DE which is a PCIe. My bad.

I believe the Sony App will capture whatever is presented correctly to Windows, as the app is very rudimentary. But like I said, the lack compression and better alternatives provided generally by manufacturers, I do not see the point to using the capture utility these days. When I need to capture a video signal, I generally use Blackmagic's included app, or go to an encoder app for live or direct mp4 capture.

Yea, I was going to ask if the device came with a capture app but it's advertised as "works with any app" so they don't include one. The problem is that VidCap only captures SD and Sony created a new app for HD that only works with Firewire but maybe VidCap will capture whatever you feed it? I don't have any HD USB cameras to test with.

Good morning and thank you for your responses, my "auto notify" must settings must not be set correctly, thank you for taking the time to look at this situation, after all was said and done I received an email from Magewell support in China, after downloading their capture software and doing some diagnostic testing, they/we concluded the unit is defective.
Must say thier support team is very responsive to customers, they sent an RMA # and I will be sending this back to China.
Then we will try this again.... With hopefully better results I'm sure, thanks again guys! Creative Cow is my "go to" troubleshooter... Happy New Year to you and your families!
