[Doug Jackson] "Hmm, what does this mean for us Vegas users?"
You must have missed it but Sony commented that Vegas Pro 13.0 will be supported in "maintenance mode" with no current plans for a Vegas Pro 14.0. It appears that Catalyst Edit will become the replacement over time but they are not saying that just yet. The "official" party line is that Catalyst Edit is aimed at a different customer base than Vegas Pro. The latest release of Catalyst Edit already has the basic functionality you need to edit most videos. It will be interesting to see what develops.

Yeah, I think I missed some of those details.

Anyone tried the 'Catalyst Edit' and care to comment on it?

Yea, everyone uses different features in Vegas Pro. This new version of Catalyst Edit is pretty feature complete now that it has FX and generators. I would definitely download the trial and tell us what you think.

You would have to define "better". It has far less features so in that way it's not better. It may be more stable or make better use of GPU so in that way it would be better. You would have to see for yourself on your computer.

It all depends on what features you need. For example, if you need to record voice overs, then Catalyst Edit can't record audio so it's definitely not better or a replacement for you. But if you just edit video, add a few transitions, some FX, and a title, then it might just be fine.

I have only played with it so please don't take my word for it. That's why I said it "may" be more stable. I don't know. I use Final Cut Pro X for all of my editing so I won't be moving to Catalyst Edit any time soon. I was just pointing out that Sony is making great strides towards filling in the missing function. I'm not saying that people should drop Vegas Pro and move to Catalyst Edit.

It seems that sony is tryng to develop a package of apps for the editor. They have sound forge and maybe vegas would be repacked to make is an fx app maybe catalyst motion. all tied to sony camera at least for its imprtans features.
It looks like sony is looking to capture the independant producer and indepent post. those that dont share with others.

Catalyst Edit is much improved over the 1.0 version tried originally. It still feels much like 1.5 version software.

Some of the notable issues I saw was:

ACES support but no EXR support.
F5 RAW support to ACES, but no export to a non 709 format.
Cineform.avi did not seem to be recognized.
Prores-HQ.mov on PC did not see to be recognized.

So this is what I am talking about. Prepare exports openexr, yet edit has no support for image sequence formats like dpx, or exr. Unless there is some other way to import that I am not seeing.
