DVDA Subtitle Duration Bug
on Nov 1, 2015 at 8:08:04 pm

DVDA 6.0 and 5.x add what appears to be an extraneous and malicious low level command after the STOP subtitle command in the VOB file. Different DVD chipsets react differently to this bad “Set Field Indexes” command. Sony DVD players (NOT Blue Ray players) ignore the bad command. Sony and Oppo Blue Ray players play the subtitle as an infinite subtitle (until next subtitle).

I believe this means DVDA DVDs do not comply with applicable DVD specifications with regard to subtitles. Blu Ray disks created by DVDA do not have this problem.

My Question even after searching the forum: Is this a know widely known DVDA bug? If so is there a fix? I have found that the free DVDSubEdit tool can fix each subtitle one at a time. But I cannot find a way to “globally” remove the bad command. Any thoughts?

This bug is easy to validate. Create a short media generated video in Vegas with 3-4 chapters. For easy locating, add subtitle at chapters in DVDA and create VOB files. Examine with DVDSubEdit tool.

Boy, seems you went at great lengths to dig up this bug, but that is not
easy to validate at all!.... Unfortunately i don't use DVDA anymore!

Steve

I suspect Creating DVDs with subtitles now a days is rare, but I get requests. No great lengths at all in finding this problem.

I do routine Compatibility testing on my disks between DVD players and BD Players and it hits you in the face right away: Person stops talking but Subtitle continues BUT only on Blue Ray players.

It did take a bit of searching on the Internet and ONE other person already found the problem. I simply verified the problem with the 10 minute test I described. The DVDSubEdit tool was important in verifying.

It is an elusive problem in that the Various players react differently to the bad command.

Reported to Sony. I'd love them to write a Fix it app but we will see.

What are "same class" alternatives to DVDA?
