Lagging preview with brand new PC
on Oct 15, 2015 at 10:16:46 pm

Hi guys,

I just bought a brand new ASUS gaming laptop with the following settings:

Intel Core i74720HQ 2.60GHz @ 2.6 GHz
1 TR HDD / 250 GB SSD (SONY VEGAS IS INSTALLED ON SSD)
16GB System RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M (2GB)

The preview screen is lagging in all configurations !!

[lucas serra] "Intel Core i74720HQ 2.60GHz @ 2.6 GHz"
That is a slow CPU for video editing. I would have went with a 3.2 Ghz - 4.0 Ghz.
[lucas serra] "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M (2GB)"
That's a poor choice for Vegas Pro because it doesn't have good OpenCL support like an AMD Radeon R9 290x would have given you.
[lucas serra] "The preview screen is lagging in all configurations !!"
I'd say your preview is still lagging because you bought s PC with the wrong parts for Vegas Pro editing.

Having said that... i'd be remiss in my duties if I didn't ask these questions:
  • Does you project properties match your source media properties? A mismatch can cause lagging.

  • Are you using 8-bit or 32-bit color in your properties? 32-bit can cause lagging.

  • What type of media are you using? HDV, AVCHD, 4K? Some media is easier to handle than others.

Any of the above things can affect playback. Perhaps post a screen shot if your project properties so we can see how you have your project set up.

Intel Core i74720HQ 2.60GHz @ 2.6 GHz
Should have opt for higher Ghz than that.
And far better response with an AMD Card instead.

Vegas Pro isn't the best at editing native GoPro footage. Did you convert it to CineForm AVI files with GoPro Studio? That would be your best choice for faster playback.

I think an R9 video card would have been a better choice. I have one in my Toshiba 4K laptop and have no problems playing back footage out of the Go Pro at 4K or 1920 by 1080. The best part is when I render with the newest version of Sony 13 the processors all accelerate well above the 2.6 they are rated at. The only issues I have is the scaling issue. I can live with that. A note here, Sony's newest build does a better job on the scaling issue It's better but it is still there.

Hi John,

To what 'scaling' issue are you referring?

Doug..

The scaling issue I spoke of will show up as some of your tools and menu's will be very small because of the 4K display. I am not sure if the computer you have has a 4K display or not. If not it won't be an issue. I read in other answers to your question that the CPU isn't fast enough, but I disagree. the CPU throttles up beyond 3 gh when rendering and never looks back. The problem you are having I believe is the choice of the video card. Sony doesn't play well with a cuda card. On the other hand it plays quite well with the AMD R9 card. GPU rendering and play bach work great using the latest build of Vegas 13.

Hi John,

Thanks for the clarification with scaling issue.
No 4k in my house so no worries there.
I was not the originator of the question, but have recently added an AMD R9 290x to my system -- so the word 'issues' in your response to lucas caught my eye.

Hi Thayalan,

I am running the GoPro Studio SW to convert GoPro native files to CineForm AVI files on my Vegas Pro 13 machine with no issues.
There is a GoPro 'importer' app that runs at start up that I 'exit' manually after booting up since I don't use it.

Yea, I also have GoPro Studio running with Vegas Pro and there are no issues to report. In fact, this is one of the ways to get the CineForm codec for free in Vegas Pro.

Installing GoPro Studio should have enabled Vegas Pro to read the files (it does on my computer)

What version of Vegas Pro?

Can you upload a small clip of your camera media to Dropbox or Gdrive? I will see if I can help you convert it.
