SV13 renders black frames
on Sep 5, 2015 at 12:34:11 pm

I have a series of clips shot with a Sony Z1U that I tried to render to NTSC widescreen video for DVD. I get some frames that appear to be half scanned frames and totally black frames. The black frames are from 2 to 6 frames long.

I have SV12 on the same machine and it will render it perfectly!

Any ideas?

Are you using the MainConcept MPEG2 Renderer?

One suggestion. Before render, always save your file, close Vegas and restart. For whatever reason, HDV, DV, and other avi codecs seem to produce these elusive black frames, especially if you've done a lot of editing and fail to restart. If all else fails, do your editing in V13, save and then render in V12 since project files for these two versions are interchangeable.

If you were using MainConcept for MPEG2 and when all else fails, AND trying a reboot of machine, I've had to resort to creating a Digital Intermediary and then create a NEW Veg to render just that DI.

I've had exactly the very same issue: Black Frames & Inverted Fields WITHIN THE VERY SAME FRAME !! Nasty....

I always save, close and start fresh for renders. It doesn't help

Thanks Kevin. I want to hear from somebody who's had success with MC in VP13 and hear what they've done to do it. Yeah....

Hey Kevin, the culprit im suspecting is indeed Mainconcept, i simply never
use it, i always stick with Sony AVC and fill in whatever workaround needed.
Did this just started happening?

Steve, do you know if MainConcept is carrying on developing for SCS? Is it possible that MC and SCS need to work closer on this? Interesting.

Sorry Graham, nothing along that line of development is being done....

Hi Steve
It has been an on again-off again problem for some time. But this time saving, closing restarting etc did not help. I have, in the past changed the Preview quality settings and seen adifference, but it may just be a coincidence!

Yeah, its coincidence. There are alternatives so i avoid using it, but only
wish i had its 2Pass feature in other file format options. But tell me, Have you recently updated your video card or something?

[Steve Rhoden]

Me too. I have never used Mainconcept except for preview rendering. Even before the advent of HD, CCE Basic always produced superior renders for me. For HD MPEG renders, Procoder is still my choice--faster and superior renders IMHO than Mainconcept. I even paid for the upgrade to the Mainconcept standalone encoder and deleted it after awhile.

but only wish i had its 2Pass feature in other file format options.

Not sure what formats you're referencing, but most encoders do support 2 pass renders--certainly Handbrake, Procoder, and TMPGEnc.

Steve

No changes at all to the computer and no new programs or updates

What settings do you use with the Sony renders?

Wayne, im referring to render formats in Vegas, Sony AVC that i use
daily, i wish that had a 2 pass feature, plus some further tweaking by Sony.

Can AVC be used for our colleague's DVD authoring?
