Can't see borders after rendering HD
on Aug 9, 2015 at 4:02:47 pm

After rendering in 1920x1080 I can't see the FULL video when played on TV. It's like my TV eats an inch from each side of the picture.

You can't expect anything toward the very edge of 1920x1080 to appear on a TV. Turn on the safe guides in your preview window and don't put any borders outside the outer guide.

OK, thanks for clarifying that fact! So I guess that after setting the safe area % I would need to test (fine tune) what is actually shown on my TV, right?

Testing is never a bad thing (but don't tell that to a software salesperson).

No, unless you plan to never watch on anything but that one that TV and you expect that TV to last forever. The Action Safe area is set to 10% because TV manufactures are allowed to cut off up to 10% of the picture. If you want to be safe, keep your action within the 10% safe area so and your titles with the 20% Title Safe area so that they display correctly on all TV's.

Thanks for further explanation John, I will keep that in mind. To be honest I didn't have an idea that manufacturers are doing so. I was sure that I was the one doing something wrong!

BTW in most videos that I edit I have at least one .jpg for which I do some border in Photoshop. After rendering I notice that border is almost missing on TV screen. Now I know the answer...

Here's an easy way to determine the amount of overscan on your TV. Simply download and "play" the file on your TV. My older RPTV has an overscan of 10%, but the 2 newer LCD TV's are 5%.

Just a little something I put together when learning Proshow Producer.

Thanks Wayne, very useful little video.

You're quite welcome. Glad that you found it useful. One other thing. Some of the newer LCD TV's, including an older Sony that I own, have the option to display full pixel. However, its probably safer to assume at least 5% (my choice) or even 10% as John recommended to be extra safe.
