Adding other codecs ?
on Jul 28, 2015 at 6:08:04 pm

I have MSP 12

There are a limited number of options under 'Render As'

I have added Cineform HD and x264 codecs to my computer.
As these are VFW compliant they automatically appear in my other graphics programs.

They do not appear in MSP ... as these are rated as considerably better than the basic CONY or MainConcept codecs it would be advantageous to be able to use them.

Are there any additional template packs ? ... or is there a way to 'add these codecs'

I know I could look into frameserving the MSP output direct to VirtualDub and using codec there, just messy doing it that way.

Movie Studio does not show you codecs in the render dialog. It shows you render templates. If you want to use a new codec, you need to make a new render template for it yourself. The list of installed codecs will show up under the Video Format drop down list when you create the template. Here is a tutorial on my web site where I show you how to create a Cineform HD template for Vegas Pro. It should be very similar for Movie Studio:

Tried following steps ....
Step 1 is OK
On Step 2 when I Render As > Video for Windows ..... there is no option in the drop down list that is 'uncompressed'
List starts with NTSC DV and ends with HD-1080 24 YUV .... no template under Video for Windows called uncompressed.

Yea, I guess the Sony developers have nothing better to do than to keep changing the options with every release... For HD just pick one of the the HD-1080 YUV templates with the same frame rate as a starting point.

OK .. thanks anyway ...
I have some excellent codecs on my PC ... in particular
The x264vfw - H.264.MPEG-4 codec, very highly rated.

I'll take a look at Frameserving out to Virtual Dub and render from there.
Also then gives me options to use the Grass Valley HQx and CineForm codecs.

Actually, there is no reason in 2015 to deliver MPEG-4 video in anything but an MP4 container. The fact that x264vfw uses the out-dated Video for Windows format in an AVI container is big problem for Vegas Pro because it's not expecting MPEG4 to be in this container. The same is true for DivX and XviD. You should be using either the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC MPEG-4 encoders with Vegas Pro. It's OK to render to this format if you have a compelling reason to deliver H.264 as an AVI file but I would not try and edit any of it on the Vegas Pro timeline because it will just cause problems.

Thanks John ... it was for final output that I would be looking to use that codec .... not as input media to Vegas.
Thanks for the explanation - all helps with my knowledge.

Or if you want more options under "Render As" you can simply try getting
a copy of the Pro version of Vegas...
