Which GPU to select for acceleration
on Jul 26, 2015 at 6:51:02 am

Hey good people of these forums,

As always I come with a question, and since you guys have been amazingly helpful so far I hope you could perhaps help me out once more!

When checking preferences>video, I see I have two options for GPU acceleration. I had to turn off GPU acceleration for a number of reasons at one point, and now I have forgotten which option was preferable. The options I have are a NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M, and an Intel HD Graphics 4600. I tend to lean towards the GT 740M, since I think that's my dedicated graphics card and the other one is for the screen, but if one is objectively better than the other please tell me!

Thank you so much,

Mark

Please explain?

You are correct that normally the NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M should perform better than the Intel HD Graphics 4600 but with Vegas Pro... you never know. Vegas Pro uses OpenCL for timeline playback acceleration so the question is which of those two choices has better OpenCL support? I would do some tests for yourself and see. I'm thinking he NVIDA might still beat out the Intel but you never know. Try 'em both and see which plays back smoother.

My system uses both the HD4000 from my i7 3770K processor and an Nvidia 650. I've done tests in the past and the Nvidia came out on top in terms of preview performance with GPU selected. (Results are posted on the Vegas Pro forum). Renders were also quicker because of the effects processing. The advantage of having both video cards is that you can then select Quick sync for much faster renders from the Vegas timeline although they are limited to 720P (For whatever reason, 1080P renders are broken in Vegas using QS.) Sadly, you cannot render with QS from Vegas unless one of your displays is driven by the Intel adapter, unlike other encoders, hence the use of both display adapters.
