Vegas 11 64bit codec issues?
on Jul 14, 2015 at 6:47:06 am

Hi all,

I purchased a Dell XPS 15 recently and installed Vegas 11 64bit on it. The laptop is running x64 and Win 8.1 with GT 750M graphics

When I try to open .mxf clips ingested from my PDW-700 camera into Vegas, the clips appear in XDCAM explorer with the hour glass symbol and only the audio track drops onto the time line.

I can open the clips in XDCAM Viewer and Windows Media Player fine.

When I first installed Vegas, the Dell was newly setup with no added codec packs etc. I subsequently installed K-lite codec with no change.

Do I need a specific 64bit codec to work with .mxf file in Vegas 11 64bit?

Thanks
Michael

Did this work with your old computer? I thought I read that Vegas Pro 13.0 had problems with PDW-700 until a recent update. That might affect VP11 as well.

You should never install codec packs. They will mess up your ability to use Vegas Pro by replacing Sony's codecs with free ones that don't work well with Vegas Pro.

Hi John, my previous computer was a Core i3 with Nvidia GT425M and Vegas 11 32bit ran like a dream. Never had any problems and although many don't approve, I had the ffdshow codec pack installed with no issues.

I edit files from a GoPro, a dashcam and mobile phones so I needed the extra codecs. As I said, all ran like clockwork.

Gspot indentifies the.mxf files as MPEG2 but says "codec not installed". Weird, because XDCAM Viewer and WMP play them fine.

Also, in Vegas XDCAM Explorer, highlighting a clip brings up "stream attributes could not be determined, MPEG-2 HD 35Mbps (VBR) - HQ.

It seems that Vegas is not "seeing" the codecs that WMP and XDCAM Explorer are seeing.

Vegas doesn't need to "see" anything. It supports XDCAM natively using it's own decoders. That's why it's really strange that it doesn't work on your computer because right out-of-the-box this should simply work with just Windows and Vegas Pro and nothing else. I wish I had something to tell you to try but this should just work.

Probably its a limitation that was in Vegas 11 at the time.

Well you were right Steve. It seems that VP11 64bit has issues with either Win 8.1 or working in a 64 bit environment.

My son has VP13 64bit running on a x64 platform laptop with Win 8.1 and it had no issues opening the mxf files from my camera.

So hence I've upgraded to VP13 on the XPS15 and all is well. Very stable and it renders at blistering speeds. I have to fix the avi issue and that will do me.

Thanks all for you help.

Michael

[John Rofrano] "With files from your PDW-700 camera?"

Yes, 99% of the editing on previous computer was with .mxf files from the camera. Never had a problem.

I will try a re-install and see what happens.

I now have Vegas 13 64bit working with all files I throw at it except the mp4 video files from the Blackberry Q10. When I drop the files into the timeline only the video track appears - no audio. I think the BB Q10 video uses AAC audio codec.

One fix I found online was to remove, or rename the compoundplug folder in the Vegas FileIO Plug-Ins folder. Yes, the .mp4 audio tracks start to show on the timeline as normal.By disabling the compoundplug folder, Vegas then uses the qt7plug.dll for mp4 files.

But the trade-off in this fix is that HD mxf files no longer work in the timeline - audio tracks only, no video.

I hope Sony can fix this issue in the next build of VP13.

Mike
