import .amr audio format into vegas pro
on Jul 2, 2015 at 5:29:25 pm

Client gave me some recordings from her phone in .amr format.

Sony vegas pro 13 doesn't recognize them.

Sony soundforge 11 doesn't recognize them.

They play fine on my quicktime player.

Is there any plug into sony vegas or sound forge to allow the use of these files?

thanks
john

There is an article on wikipedia that discusses this format. There are also free downloads of the codec (use "amr codec download" in Google). There are also free conversion programs (use ".amr audio file" in Google) which will convert the files to formats that Vegas and Sound Forge can use. If you install a codec, I would be sure that only the amr codec is installed.

Thanks you guys.

I downloaded a converter and got the job done.

However, I was interested in a more integrated solution, so I downloaded klite codec pack.

That indeed allowed windows media player to play the amr file.

However I was under the impression it would allow soundforge or vegas pro 13 to use the same codec to open the amr file. It did not.

Was my installation incorrect, or was my expectation incorrect?

I hope you did not install the whole klight pack. That has been known to overwrite the codecs used by Vegas, and would probably do the same to Sound Forge. That is why I said to install just the codec for amr.

Thanks for the warning.

I tried to just install the needed codec like you suggested, but there was no choices for codecs in the installation process. So I believe it installed all of them. There were choices for add on apps like browser plugins etc, which I unchecked all of.

What did I miss?

I'm sorry, but I have always heeded the warning to not install K-Lite. Thus, I have no experience with how to use it. Perhaps someone else can chime in at this point to explain what, if any, problems may result from installing a codec package? Perhaps the simplest remedial step is to uninstall Vegas and Sound Forge, and then reinstall both. That will give them some opportunity to reestablish their codecs.

Thanks for all your help you guys.

I downloaded a 15 day trial converter and got the client going.

I have multiple computers, so I won't use the one with the klite codecs until I have time to remove and resinstall the sony software.

I still don't understand this codec issue. Is there a codec registration location somewhere in windows, where I can actually see a list of installed codecs? And do all applications have access to all codecs? Is it like fonts
