Sony Vegas 12 Won't Launch, Open, Dead...
on Jun 26, 2015 at 10:55:04 pm

Strange thing happened. Suddenly Sony Vegas 12 just stopped working. Trying to launch results in nothing happening. Even trying to run as administrator in the Programs folder does nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled (and probably screwed up all my plugins) and still nothing. Searched online for answers and nothing worked, most had load issues after seeing something. I get nothing. He's dead, Jim.

One thing to note - this problem happened before my CPU upgrade, I'm 95% sure of it. My video driver is updated to the latest version, which was required in order to get my dual monitor system working. s

I've had this happen to me. I updated my graphics card driver and Vegas Pro would not load. I had to go back to the old driver, open Vegas and turn GPU Acceleration OFF in Option | Preferences, then update the driver and turn GPU Acceleration back on again. See if that helps.

John - thanks for the advice. I wish I could get Vegas to open. Double click, I see it launch and nothing. Goes nowhere.

And there is no "old" driver. I'm using a z68 motherboard with the onboard video with Intel 4000 graphics. I do have an nVidia 570 card available but I'd prefer not to put that in. The CUDA encoding was good but wasn't worth the extra power needed and the fan noise, which some don't mind. Considering I've moved to Ivy Bridge and an 97-3770K CPU, I'm actually preferring to use that for encoding. And the program should work without having to resort to video card use.

Unfortunately I don't have my old versions of Vegas before 0770 and don't think they are available. I'm not going to upgrade to 13 now just to get it working again. I'll try to follow your direction of reinstalling something to get it to work. Thanks again for your help.

[Michael West] "And there is no "old" driver. "
I'm not following. You said that Vegas Pro 12 stopped working. That implies that it once worked. You then said that you updated your video driver to get dual monitors to work. I'm suggesting that the new updated driver might be the problem. How can there be no "old" driver when you said you updated it?

Bottom line: It worked... you changed something... it doesn't work! You need to figure out what you changed.

All I changed was the CPU from a slower i7 to the fastest Ivy Bridge CPU. When you do this, your old driver for Intel Graphics won't work properly and only one monitor will show. Windows basically helps you take care of the rest by simply going to Device Manager, selecting Display Graphics and in it you see Intel Graphics 4000. That's all I needed to upgrade. You can't use the "old" drivers because that was for a different device / CPU. That is the only thing I changed.

I recall having this issue before I even changed the CPU - which is why I used other software to trim a video. So I'm pretty sure that even upgrading the CPU didn't cause the problem.

The sad part is that I started to learn another product because everything I've done will not even get Vegas 12 to start up. I don't even get an error message that Vegas isn't happy with the video driver. It just doesn't launch at all. Is there a log file which will provide some type of error message?

Ah, I see. You may be out of luck then if your problem was the same as mine. Without being able to go back and turn off GPU acceleration, I couldn't get Vegas Pro to load no matter what I did (including resetting and re-installing Vegas Pro).

You might want to contact Sony Support. I think it's a bug in their GPU initialization.

John, thanks as always for being such a great resource here. I think you're probably right and it's time to contact Sony support to see what wizardry they have available there. I'll post a solution/update here if and when it arrives.

The only way to get it to work was to remove the install associated with the program entirely and force reregistration as such:

uninstall vegas

open regedit.exe, retract folder tree till selected only "computer"

edit > find "Vegas Pro 12.0 Kernel" (without quotes, 12 if using vegas 12)

if find in a folder with a bunch of number like "{3B5E27AF-A677-11d7-A773-00C04F68F44E}" , delete this folder only, where it found the "Vegas Pro 12.0 Kernel" - or in the alternative. Delete the keys for both Vegas Pro 12. Kernel and the second key that that has numbers in it.

reinstall vegas.

Glad you figured it out. I believe Sony has a procedure for complete removal in their knowledge base but it sounds like you removed enough of it to get going again. Very strange.
