MP4 files won't play in Sony Vegas Pro 8.0??
on Jun 19, 2015 at 10:20:45 pm

This has been bothering me for months and I haven't yet found a solution. Whenever I try to import mp4 to Sony Vegas it either gives me an error message, gives me only the audio of the clip, or gives me a black screen. I use Windows Vista if that helps. If anyone has a solution, please please please tell me. I'm sick of having this problem and having to convert because conversions normally will give me a file 2x the size the original and take a long time. Thanks.

You can't expect old software to work with newer formats. Vegas Pro 8.0 is 5 versions behind. It was released in 2008 (7 years ago) and hasn't been updated since 2011 with version 8.0c so that's 4 years ago.

Make sure that you at least have version 8.0c. According to the release notes, that had some improvements for reading MP4 files. If it won't read your files then it may be time to upgrade your software.

Because its time for you to upgrade Sony Vegas Anya!
You are bound to have issues working with new video formats
in old software applications.

Thanks to all for your replies!

So the problem here seems to be my old software, huh? I had just wondered why it could render as .mp4 but I couldn't import it. I had no idea it was too old for it!

I have been thinking about purchasing Sony Vegas 11 for some time, however. Would that solve the issue?

Render a VP8 MP4. Use MediaInfo and report bak here with what it tells you. Now, use MediaInfo on the MP4 you can't import. What is the difference?

MP4 is an envelop. What is contained inside can vary. Same for AVI and all other Video containers.

Find out the difference between those 2 MP4s and you'll have your answer. So, VP can import MP4, but only rise recognised by VP.

Yes!
And even if you find a work around for those .mp4, i would still advise you
to upgrade, because you may hit the wall again as soon as you try importing
new video formats into Vegas Pro 8.

[Anya Ngombe] "I had just wondered why it could render as .mp4 but I couldn't import it."
Because MPEG-4 is a huge specification that no software can totally support. There are so many Parts, and Levels, and Profiles that it's mind boggling. Saying a file is MPEG-4 is like saying an animal is a mammal. That doesn't really tell you much except that it isn't a bird or a fish. Newer version of Vegas Pro can import more versions of MPEG-4 but there will always be MPEG-4 files that Vegas Pro cannot import and cannot generate. That's just the nature of MPEG-4.

Why wouldn't you get the latest version 13? If you want the most compatibility, you should get the latest software. I would download the 30-day free trial and see if it works with your MP4 file before you buy anything.
