DVD-A MPG from Compressor 4

Anybody have the super secret magic mojo settings for a FCPX->Compressor 4->MPEG-2 workflow so that DVD-A Pro does not throw up when creating the VOB with a "Invalid data was encountered when processing an MPEG file" error?
Video looks good in Preview, does not try to re-compress and gets nearly completed before burping and throwing said error.
I've tried 'ReStream' on the MPEG-2 file as suggested in previous post to remove user data, but the dreaded error persists.
Anyone have a clue if there is any more detail in any DVD-A log file to perhaps shed some insight on what else to hunt?
I'm presently using the latest DVD-A 5.2, but also have access to 6 -- just haven't tried it since I built the menus in 5.2.
Any other mpg->mpg cleanser/fixer suggestions?
Supposedly there was an MPEG2Repair at one time but all the links in cyberspace seem to fail (at least the ones I trust using).

Regards,

So, I tried DVD-A 6 and had the same results with MPEG-2.

The editor is working in FCPX with 720p source and I'm tasked with creating the DVD in DVD-A pro (either 5.2 or 6) and we can't seem to get an MPEG-2 out of Compressor (4.2) that will successfully make a DVD.

Can anyone recommend a format the Editor can export to me so I can use DVD-A to make a DVD for them?
I was trying to avoid recompression, and since that seems futile, what's the best intermediate format for him to send? Quality and reasonable file size are a plus.

I was going to test this out for you since I work on a Mac and use Windows occasionally via bootcamp but since your error happens at the end of burning a DVD I would have to also burn a DVD to see if I can recreate the problem but I haven't had the time to go that far. I don't see why the Compressor render would be fine at the beginning and cause problems at the end. It's just creating an MPEG2 elemental stream (m2v) file with a separate ac3 file for audio.

I see in Compressor that there is an option under General Properties called Add Apple metadata and it is checked by default. As him to render with that unchecked. Perhaps this metadata is what's causing the problem? Also make sure he's using Create DVD and not the regular MPEG2 templates.

The other editor can always send you an Apple ProRes 422 file and you can create the MPEG2 file on your end. Since the original is HD and the DVD will be SD I wouldn't worry about recompression. Apple ProRes 422 is a high quality digital intermediary that will hold up to multiple re-renders without quality loss but like all digital intermediaries it produces very large files. Hopefully disabling the Apple metadata will work. Let us know.

John,

Thank you for the response!

The error occurs when I "Prepare" DVD from DVD-A and it seems like it is at the very tail end of the VOB creation process. I most always separate the prepping and burning.

You may be on to it with the 'metadata' -- we'll give your suggestions a try.

John,

File size estimate for ProRes 422 exporting from FCPX?
~1 GB per minute?

Once again, Mr. Rofrano to the rescue! Looks like the "Apple metadata" was the culprit!

Thanks, John!

[Doug Jackson] "Looks like the "Apple metadata" was the culprit!"
Awesome! I don't know what that metadata is but it looks like Sony doesn't like it. This is good to know.

[Doug Jackson] "File size estimate for ProRes 422 exporting from FCPX? ~1 GB per minute?"
Yea, there are multiple bit rates for Apple ProRes so the file size can vary depending on the quality.

Apple ProRes target data rates for 1920x1080 29.76 fps:
  • Apple ProRes 4444: 330 Mbps
  • Apple ProRes 422 (HQ): 220 Mbps
  • Apple ProRes 422: 147 Mbps
  • Apple ProRes 422 (LT): 102 Mbps
  • Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy): 45 Mbps
As you can see, ProRes files can become quite large depending on the quality you select.
