Does Vegas have diagnostics....error loading a project?
on May 29, 2015 at 5:03:22 pm

We saved a project and re-opened a veg file and got the following error before anything loaded on the timeline:

An error occurred while loading the project file Film (edit 2-2).veg. Item not found.

We tried to open the project using v12 (created in 12) and v13 and on two different PC's and the same error occurred. The strange thing is that we have several veg files for this project at different stages and all but one comes back with this error.

I tried renaming the source folders and no change....except for the veg that worked...it now complains that it cannot find the media.

We also dropped all the original media onto a fresh timeline (no editing etc) and the veg opens fine!

The error first occurred when the we did multiple "undo"s and the project froze....when reopening the project the error occurred. The odd part is that it affected several older untouched vegs too.

Is there a switch or diagnostic tool in Vegas to find out more details on WHAT "item not found"?

Unfortunately this problem exists at times when you have multiple veggie
files (.veg) on the timeline in a project. After a while when opening your
project, at times there are errors/difficulty getting it opened, like whats
happening to you.
There is no set solution, renaming the folder the project is in and moving it
to another location often works and even trying several times until you get it
open. BUT personally what i do is simply dont drop any veggie files in my
project timeline anymore, i just take the time to render out what i need and
then drop that on the timeline.
When im on a deadline and to have such an error, is stressful!

Thanks Steve.

We actually don't have multiple veg files on the timeline. What I meant is that we saved different versions of the veg files as the project progress. ex edit 1-0, edit 1-2, edit 2-0, etc

The thing that surprises me is that the issue is across all the veg files for this project except for one where we just had a small piece of the media. I thought it might be media related so I renamed all the media folders and still got the same error....except for the one that worked where it complained about not finding the media. So, the error occurs before Vegas looks for the media but after all the empty standard windows open.

After the error we also tried loading all the media to a timeline with no editing and that veg works fine. Weird!

If only I could figure out what Vegas was looking for!

Glad you at least found a workaround, thats good.
Vegas sometimes have some odd behavior lol, but trust me, some
of the other NLE's are a lot weirder in function, lol, less drama with Vegas.

Thanks Steve,

Unfortunately, the work around is now just starting as we now have to redo a few days of editing with the nagging fear that at any time we may end up with the error again...especially not know what the issue was to begin with.

I've always been in the habit of saving veg files so that we could go back a few steps if we ran into an error or something really messed up. The worst part about this is that it blew up all the veg files we've been saving along the way. Since we never touched these veg files and renaming the media folders did not seem to impact it and we tried different PCs and different versions of Vegas all with the same error....I have to conclude that the problem is something in the veg file not entirely related to the project.

Hopefully creating a new veg and redoing all the editing will work.

Cheers,
John

Well lets hope, just to be safe, its best when you save all your projects
along with the Source files (Videos and audios) in one folder on an external
hard drive, in one location.
That i can guarantee you is peace of mind, of never having an issue whenever
you need to reopen them.
