Compositing Just One Track
on May 22, 2015 at 10:44:26 am

Hi,

Is there a way to have a composite mode only affect the track below and not all the other tracks? Example: I want to composite ADD some video to a lower third, but only the lower third, not the video beneath.

I've tried parent/child with no luck. I know I could render the title out or use a nested project, but wondering if there's a way I can keep it all in one project.

Thanks!

No. Compositing affects all tracks below it.

Using a Nested Project is the way to go. You shouldn't be hesitant about using nested projects. Vegas Pro doesn't support Compound Clips or Nested Sequences like other NLE's so Nested Project is the equivalent/similar functionality.

Thats strange. Maybe I don't fully understand the situation.

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/webhelp/vegaspro/12/ENU/Content/Composi...

I used to be able to do this in Vegas years ago. I think last version I was doing this was v4. of course been using more recent versions since.

But I have just been trying this agin with no luck in v 12. Using the settings in the docs above.

Not working at all how it is described.

Should be able to go:

Parent (Mask)
Child
Parent

And the last one should show through.

"In this example, the third track is also a parent, so it is displayed behind the composite of tracks one and two."

Did you read the information in the link you pointed to? Vegas 4 handled this differently. It says:
The compositing model in Vegas Pro 6.0 and later differs significantly from the Vegas Pro 4.0 model. To reproduce the Vegas Pro 4.0 parent/child masking behavior, set the compositing mode of the parent track to Multiply, and then apply the Mask Generator plug-in as a track effect on the parent track.
Actually, I just tried using Parent/Child for the original posters problem and it worked fine for me. No need to use a nested project as I suggested.

So now I'm wondering why it didn't work for him. I added the Composite Mode to a title track, then placed both the title track and lower third track under a Parent track and the composite mode only affected the title and lower third and not the video below it.

Ah right thanks. Good catch. I missed that little bit. Don't know why. Think it is the needed step.

Much appreciated.

Yea, the Mask Generator was automatically added when compositing prior to Vegas 6 and then you had to add it manually as a plug-in after that. I'm glad that got it working for you.
