I'm a bit confused.

Is the new Sony Catalyst Suite the next evolution of Sony Vegas Pro, or is it a completely separate family of products?

The edit tool looks interesting, but quite different than SVP.

No, its not nothing near a next evolution of Sony Vegas Pro.
It serves an entirely different function for a different category of the
editing process.
More of a collaboration tool for a multi-task studio!

No it is not a replacement for any NLE. It is a toolset much as the apps that were created when it came time to migrate from SD to HD footage. Please note the primary function of the toolset is to generate intermediate files for various platforms ranging from desktop models down to tablets. Finally there is a service offering to upload to a cloud system. My suspicion is to compete with Adobe and Avid who already offer such services.
Also I suspects the basic tools such as color grading is provided to avoid sowing flat images to clients or directors and stringing together a days worth of shooting would also be of use to determine the flow of a story.

Now this is merely my conjecture so as to the exact reasons as to why the software was created you will need to ask Sony.

As others have said it's a completely new line of products and not a replacement for Vegas Pro. Sony has hinted that there are more products to come in the suite so who knows where it will lead but it has quite a long way to go before it reaches the depth of Vegas Pro's functionality if it ever does at all.

[Steve Rhoden] "Can't understand why so much users are worried"
Well, people are worried that this may be the end of the line for Vegas Pro. Sony has stated that they will continue to develop Vegas Pro so it doesn't seem like there is anything to worry about.

Not only that, but more and more top plugin developers are now seriously
investing in supporting Vegas Pro and already tons of them are available
for Vegas already. That also is an indication that a software is doing quite
well and going nowhere.
Catalyst arrival should have actually been viewed as a reassurance, but
instead most viewed it as the opposite and went into panic mode.

I think Catalyst might be Sonys more diplomatic and actually, wiser approach to a transition similar to Apple's from FC7 to FCPX. Learning how NOT to handle it from Apple, who, just threw the FC7 people under the bus which turned out most beneficial for Adobe with some smaller benefits to Avid and others. So We will see, but I think this is where Sony Editing future will be. "A wise man sees trouble coming and prepares" You might want to start learning Catalyst now.

[Don Cobble] "I think this is where Sony Editing future will be."
Which, IMHO, is a good thing because Catalyst runs on a Mac. Now they have both platforms covered like Adobe and Avid do and can more fairly compete.
