Optical scene change detection
on May 11, 2015 at 4:31:08 pm

Hello!

I wonder if there's something to help me detect scene changes (by their content) in some video files, like .avi, .mp4, and export those changes(edits)as an .edl file or something that Sony Vegas can recognize.

Thank you very much,
Ellen

Timeline Tools (freeware) supports optical scene detection.

For DV, the old program Scenalyzer supports optical scene detection.

There were also an avisynth script written by John Meyer, "detect scene change".

I've tried all of these in the past and eventually gave up. The problem is setting the detection threshold. It seems you either get too many or too few scenes. I found it a lot easier, quicker and a lot more accurate to simply do it manually using the fast shuttle in Vegas. Once a scene change was detected, I would stop, go back 15 frames (via a script), and I would usually be just a few frames off at the most. Good luck.

Go to http://www.scenalyzer.com/

The software, the manual and the license key are available here:

So sad Scenalyzer works only with .dv files. I have only regular .avi files.

Fortunately, TimelineTools did a great job. ^_^

Thanks for all your help,
Ellen
