tracking a mask
on Apr 12, 2015 at 1:30:15 pm

Hello there!

I was about to post this in the basics section but I guess this will fit better here.

I know there are tools to save time and make our taks easier when tracking, tracking an object in the video (boris match move, or mocha pro), but i wanted to know if it is possible to track a mask using tools that sort of tools.

I know how to do it in the old way (creating the mask, and doing it frame by frame manually) and doing 10 seconds of this can takes hours to finish.

So i ended up with this question.

Sorry for my bad english, thanks in advance.

No SONY tracking tools. We have to do it manually.

Download Blackmagic Design Fusion, it is free. Do your tracking work, then export from Fusion. You can export the entire scene or just export the mask then import into Vegas.

[Russ Froze] "Download Blackmagic Design Fusion, it is free."
Wow! Thanks Russ! . . well that's Tuesday down the pan . . . . .

Are there ANY restrictions on the FREE Download? It looks very powerful and at 341 pages of Help PDF, not a little daunting too?

I need a Tutorial that will show me a Tracking Mask option - any ideas? Youtube? Vimeo?

Russ, I'm not reading about automatic tracking of the Mask? If this is correct, and with respect to auto masking, then what does it offer above the simple tools in VP Mask?

Cheers

HI Grazzie,
Yes it is a daunting looking beast and frankly when first I met the concept of node bases compositors it took a while to understand the simplicity of the concept. There are restrictions in the free version, things like network rendering, Dimension which is mostly aimed at a 3D project and optical flow. Basically tools aimed at production facilities. Also the free version will not load ofx plugins. It does have a great tracker, and splines for roto work.
The 135 PDF is but a miniscule version of the help files for most of Fusion help files were hosted on VfxPedia which was a collection of decades of work complied by the user base. BMD took it down as soon as the takeover was complete. Best bet for tutorials is to do a search for Eyeon Fusion Basics or follow the links below.

Basics can be found here

Kert Gartner has ome tutorials but here is an in depth tutorial.

Russ, thank you muchly! - Very generous of you to pull together those links. I just watched the official BMD Fusion video tutes. Which in your opinion shows the auto adjustment?

I don't understand the term auto adjustment.
I'm on the west coast, this is the end of my day so I'm not ignoring you but I need to do that sleep thing. It might take a moment for me to reply.

The long and short of it is yes. The procedure is the same as a match move.
1. Build comp
2. Track object or something moving in same direction.
3. Attach media/ spline to tracker info.

Below is a collection of 2 more tuts from Kert Gartner which demonstrate rotoscoping with the aid of tracking data.
