audio / video grouping behavior (audio not coming along for the ride)
on Mar 28, 2015 at 5:16:09 pm

Good Day,

I'm cutting and pasting clips between two timelines, and often use
'ctrl-c / v / x' commands to move things around.

Something that is slowing me down, is when I click a video clip and control-x it, it disappears (and is pasted when I control-v), but the audio clip remains and does not come along for the ride unless ctrl click both the video and audio.

This 'ctrl-click x 2 + ctrl-x + ctrl-p' is a little slow, and I'd like to be able to only select the video and have the audio 'stick'.

'Ignore event grouping' is DISABLED, and I haven't seen anything in the preferences under editing or audio.

Can anyone help me with this?

much thanks,

- t

How about if you just move the video event a little to one side, does the audio move with it? This would determine if in general your video and audio are not grouped or if it only happens with cut-n-paste.

Hi John,

I do seem to be able to click on just the video, and drag it left or right (the audio comes with). I'm also able to click once (either the video or audio track) and nudge it one frame with 1/3 numeric keys (both move).

So yes, it seems only to do with the cut and paste.

Can you verify this on your system? (ie. you click the video track once, copy and paste, and only the video pastes - without audio, unless you ctrl+click both before copying)?

I cannot reproduce this behavior unless I turn on Ignore Event Grouping. If Ignore Event Grouping is OFF, I can click on just the video, Ctrl+C to copy, move the timeline cursor and press Ctrl+V to paste and both the view and audio are pasted. Only when Ignore Event Grouping is ON it will just cut and paste the video, but otherwise both always come. This is with the latest build of Vegas Pro 13.0.

John,

Thanks very much for trying that out. It makes me think it's a software glitch, rather than a setting I'm missing, as the issue persists even after engaging and disengaging the 'ignore event grouping button' for me.

I'm on 12 (build 670), so will probably try a uninstall / re-install after this project, and an update if that doesn't work.

Thanks again,

t.

edit*

After a little more searching, I found the setting:

Preference > editing > "Cut, Copy and delete Grouped Events" was OFF

I don't know how I missed that. I supposed I should have searched harder before! Hopefully it will help someone else..

My Vegas Pro 12.0 is on build 770 and it works fine there too. Maybe you just need to apply the latest update?

John,

Thanks for checking on your Vegas 12 build.. Much appreciated.

I *think* I've got it solved, and had actually missed a setting regarding grouping and copy / paste commands (see above).

Hopefully this toggle function will come in handy on future edits :)

Wow! I didn't even know they added that. What a nasty little preference. ;-) Good spotting it!

Hi;

John, working on my 1st big SVP 12 project. Running build 770. Having a similar odd problem with the audio portion of an event not following the video portion if I click on the video and drag the event to a new track.

I have multiple tracks, each consisting of pairs of video and audio tracks. I've made sure that the video and audio portions of the events are grouped. (in SVP 11 I would have bothered with this, trying everything out of desperation). The "Cut, Copy and Delete Grouped Events" is checked on. Ignore event grouping is not enabled.

It is very annoying to have to ctrl-click both the audio and video portions of the event when dragging to another track. The problem only happens when dragging to a different track, moving left/right in the same track, the audio and video portions of the event stay together.

grrr.....

That's odd that moving left and right keeps them grouped but moving to a new track doesn't move together and even stranger if it's just this one file. What is different about it from the others? Maybe it's just a bug in Vegas Pro 12?
