Just in case any of you Vegas people are looking for an external RAID, B&H has the Drobo 3 (4-drive USB 3.0 unit) on sale for $199 until March 23. I just got mine today, upgrading from my seven-year-old Drobo 2 unit. Just move over the discs and it's good to go!
The Drobo has been a really worry-free RAID solution. It supports any mix of HDDs, so I've been able to upgrade storage over time, as drives fail -- which they all will, eventually. No need to worry about whether I can still match the make of the others... in fact, right now, I have half 3TB, half 4TB -- there's a spare 4TB on the shelf, should anything fail.
The main problem with the old Drobo was speed -- between USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 -- which is only supported under Windows when the moon is right and the Unibrain driver isn't crashing -- it was really, really slow. Since this is backup only (I have a 6TB RAID 10 in the PC), speed wasn't all THAT critical, but still important. With USB 3.0, the speed limits are the device itself.
