Motion Track an image
on Mar 19, 2015 at 11:07:04 pm

Hey !

I know that Borris Continuum allows you to motion track an image and I've done it with success but the problem is that you can only use that effect ("match move") in the "track mode" selection"...
Isn't there a way a more simple way ? Because it is really annoying to allow a whole track for only one picture to be tracked (plus the whole system is a lot more annoying that the AE tracker which is unfortunately not a SVP plugin)

You could track in a separate project and drop that into your main project as a "nested" project. They it will just act like an event. It's very similar to Pre-Comps in AE (since you seem to know AE)

Thank you for the answer ;)!!
I didn't know about nesting, I am right now looking at a tutorial about it.
Seems a bit painful though but anyway it will always be less annoying than rendering on AE then exporting to Sony Vegas.

Nesting is Sony's answer to having multiple sequences. It's a great way of isolating complex edits like multi-composited opening sequences. You can correct it's a lot better than rendering intermediate results.

Well I wa wrong, the nesting thing is pretty easy. But I got one annoying issue :

1) I put project A in the timeline of project B
2) It works great
3) Later I change something in project A, I save it
4) In project B, project A does not get updated even if I saved project A.

How can I fix that ? Instead of saving project A with another project name and put it back inside project B...

[Timothée Ferreol] "3) Later I change something in project A, I save it

How do you change it? You should be in project B and then right-click on the nested event that is project A and select "Edit in Vegas Pro". This will open a new copy of Vegas Pro so that you can change project A and when you save and return, project B will refresh itself.

Thank you I did not notice that option. Nevertheless, it does not work, even if I keep saving it, it just does not refresh.
Maybe I need to check or uncheck something in my preferences ?

No preference settings that I know of... It should just work (always worked that way for me). That's the beauty of nested projects. I can't imagine why it won't refresh for you.

Okay anyway then, it seems my vegas has issue in general to update its media files (if I change a picture file for instance it never gets updated). Thanks for the help anyway !

Second thing, I did not find the private message question John, so I'll post my question here.
Can you please tell me what are the different features you find the most useful with BCC ? There are so many, and many seems good but I'm just curious about which one is a dealbreaker (just like the tracking feature).

The tracking features definitely get a lot of use. I like the 3D Text for doing opening titles. 3D EPS is great for bringing in customer logos. Chromakey Studio is fantastic for doing green screen work. I've used the State Lights on a number occasions to add lighting where it didn't exist. UpRez is great when you have to incorporate SD footage into an HD project. Noise Reductions does really well on low light camera noise. I've used this several times to save a shot when the lighting was too low and the picture got noisy. Magic Sharp is great with cameras like GoPros where they really don't focus well. You can sharpen in post to make it look more focused. I love the 3D Particles for title sequences. You can build a title out of particles or break one up into particles. I also use Light Sweep on a lot of my titles to adda little motion. My new favorites is Grunge. I use it a lot on titles. Film Glow adds a nice soft glow to scenes. Used sparingly it gives a nice look. The film looks are great too. I'll use them to get a mood. There are also a lot of restoration plug-ins that you won't use every day but when you need them they are indispensable like flicker fixer, DV fixer, Pixel fixer, optical stabilizer, etc. as well as smooth tone & witness protection.

Then there are the traditions. Swish Pan is my favorite but the new Blur Dissolve and Film Glow Dissolve and getting a lot of use. There are a lot of plug-ins in Boris Continuum Complete and I find myself reaching for them all the time. Those are just some of the ones I've found useful.

If you want to see these in action, check my Boris TV training videos for Vegas Pro and Final Cut Pro X:

Boris TV: Continuum Complete for Sony Vegas Pro Videos (all are mine)

Boris TV: Continuum Complete for Apple Videos (the last 7 are mine)

Hope that helps,

Thank you for all these precious informations, I really appreciate it and I am gonna test the BCC ChromaKey and Denoiser.
So there is an actual difference between the Sony Sharpening feature and the BCC Magic Sharp ?
Another question : Does the optical Stabilizer is really worth using instead of the Sony's stabilization one ?

Btw I take notice of it but I won't use any 3D option features because I always find it old-fashioned and chessy, but that really is my personnal point of view ;)
I watched some of your vidéos on Boris, they're great ! I loved the one about the Corner Pin tool, pretty amazing. Especially the tweaking of the lights you do at the end, it really does sell it !

[Timothée Ferreol] "So there is an actual difference between the Sony Sharpening feature and the BCC Magic Sharp ?"
It's like night and day. Sony sharpen plug-in sharpens everything... even stuff you don't want sharpened (like noise). BCC Magic Sharp has several thresholds so that you can only sharpen small details or large features or anything in between. It also has he ability to detect what is background noise and not sharper that. It's really an amazing plug-in. You can watch me demo it as part of this Boris TV Webinar:

BCC 9 New Features Round-Up for Sony Vegas Pro
[Timothée Ferreol] "Another question : Does the optical Stabilizer is really worth using instead of the Sony's stabilization one ?"
That's a tough one because different stabilizer work better on certain footage. I always have several stabilizers in my kit. Sony includes a lite version of Mercali version 1. Mercalli is a very good stabilizer. You would have to try both and see but as I said, different stabilizer work on some footage and not on others.
[Timothée Ferreol] "Btw I take notice of it but I won't use any 3D option features because I always find it old-fashioned and chessy, but that really is my personnal point of view ;)"
Actually it's the latest thing on American television. You can't watch TV for an hour without seeing 3D words motions tracked inside of a scene for some commercial or episodic opening. It's very popular these days.

Thank you. It's the little details like matching the lighting that really makes things look natural. I'm glad you found it useful.

I found out the reason why my Vegas was not updating the nested projects, it is because in the preferences option, in the "general tab", I had unchecked :"close multimedia file when it is not the active application" (don't know the exact translation). Just saying, if that can help someone out there ;)

Btw the Magic Sharp option of BCC is magic indeed thank you so much, I had videos of a subject a little bit ouf of focus and it did the job perfectly well with some tweaking.

I'm glad it helped you out. It's an outstanding sharpening plug-in.
