Sony AVC is faster than Main Concept but
on Mar 9, 2015 at 11:46:34 pm

Hola y'all,
Can someone tell me why Sony encoding takes much less time than MC but won't release the temp file after render is finished over a network?
The workaround is to render locally and then move afterwards but just curious if you might have any suggestions.
Thanks very much my friends,
Randy

[Randy Brown] "Can someone tell me why Sony encoding takes much less time than MC"
It depends on your graphics card. MC only supports older cards circa 2010 while Sony supports newer cards.

I have no idea. I've always used local files when rendering.

Are you rendering to a UNC named share or mapped network drive? I would try mapped drive and see if the network issue remains.

I think the Main Concept Opencl is separate from the internal Vegas Opencl. There is a separate OpenCL directory for the MC codec. Sony might be leaving updates to that directory up to the third party. I have read from others that CUDA works best with MC, since CUDA will use multiple devices. Sony's OpenCL will only use one GPU for everything.

Thanks guys,

After googling to find out what the heck you're talking about I think it must be UNC named share...I don't know much about that stuff but later today I'm going to try to do the mapped network drive thingy.
Thanks again,
Randy

By the way, have you heard about or tried the script based
Frameserving to Handbrake rendering?

Not at the time of reading your post but after googling I do : )

If that is what you're talking about I'll really have to utilize it since I have to upload weekly 30-40 minute 720P clips to YT (presently taking up to 10 hours via a 20 mbps hard wired connection).
What's funny is that I used to use Handbrake a few years ago when I was uploading a lot and then forgot about it somehow after a year's period of not uploading at all.
So THANK YOU very much Steve!!!

You could try using a SUBST(ituted) drive.

\\TheServer\TheFolder\TheProject\blahblahblah
M: (mapped to) \\TheServer\TheFolder\TheProject\blahblahblah

now using SUBST:
subst S: M:
...or...
subst S: \\TheServer\TheFolder\TheProject\blahblahblah

dir of S:\ should be the same as
dir of M:\ should be the same as
dir of \\TheServer\TheFolder\TheProject\blahblahblah

Try rendering to S:\

Or you could try this.

Go to File Explorer (windows explorer) > Network (formerly Network Neighborhood) > find the server and share you want to render to. Right click on the shared folder, Select Map Network Drive, Give the drive a letter and check if you want it to stay after re-boot. Then try rendering to that drive letter.
