upgrade for integrated Intel Graphics 4000 for under $200?
on Feb 17, 2015 at 9:40:56 pm

I'm on a budget but just wondering if you guys might be able to suggest a replacement.
I'm not as worried about render time as I am smooth playback...I also get some audio snap, crackle and pops when moving the mouse.
I have the latest drivers for the following specs:

Windows 7, 64 bit, Vegas Pro 12
Intel Core i7-3770S
Asus P8Z77-V LK mobo
2X8GB Corsair XMS3 memory
180GB Corsair Force series 3 SSD
Intel Graphics 4000 (integrated)
Presonus Audiobox 22vsl

Thanks very much,
Randy

The AMD Radeon R9 280 is a great card for around $200 and the 280x is just a bit over $200. Vegas Pro will take advantage of it's OpenCL support for timeline playback. It will also work great for rendering with all formats except the older MainConcept AVC. Other than that, it's a great card for Vegas Pro.

Thanks John, the Intel Graphics 4000 also supports opencl and having Vegas set to take advantage of that does help my render times slightly but the preview and gltchy sound is driving me nuts.
That said, I will definitely take your advice and get one of these cards.
Also, I've been using MainConcept AVC because I had issues with the Sony renders...hopefully the new card will allow me to not have to use MC any more.
Thanks again,
Randy

Actually they are both overpriced and don't work fully in Vegas. A Radeon HD6970 is the best card that you can use in Vegas today. On eBay is $100-125.

Overpriced?? Compared to what?

As someone who's been building custom workstations since 1999 the cards John recommended are worth every penny and a superb value.

Wow really? I wouldn't mind using the best... especially for THAT price!

[Randy Brown] "Wow really? I wouldn't mind using the best... especially for THAT price!"

Really. I had a 7970 GB edition in my PC (the same card actually with R280X, ATI just rebranded it).
It is NOT recognized by the encoders that Sony Vegas offers (last updated in Dec 2010), so no hardware accelerated encoding with those fancy cards. Highest ATI model that is recognized is the one that I just typed above.
On nVidia side - any Fermi generation card and not newer.

Vegas is behind the curve here - I have acquired also CyberLink PowerDirector 13 (for 1/6 of the Vegas price) and guess what? It recognizes all the new video cards (nVidia, ATI, intel) and can use them to do hardware accelerated encoding even at 4K resolutions - if the card supports it!

I have the same exact motherboard and am using an AMD HD7850 2gb video card. Vegas runs fine with it. The card should be in that price range, maybe even cheaper now.

Hey Dave,
Did you ever use the integrated graphics on that mobo...if so how would you compare the performance of it to the AMD HD7850?

The motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics. It only supports it if it is provided by the CPU. The AMD HD7xxx series of cards blows away all versions of Intel integrated graphics. My Intel i5 3470k has the Intel HD 4000 graphics but I disabled it in the BIOS when I built the system.

It is not worth running integrated graphics in an editing workstation. Ever. Always go with a stand-alone graphics card.

I'm getting emails so it might just be your account.

I've changed my email to my gmail acct...maybe my website email server wasn't forwarding them as usual.
Perhaps someone could reply to this (just enter "test" if you want) so I can make sure it's working now.
Thanks very much,
Randy
EDIT- never mind I just got notification of this post...thanks again
