DVD Architect 6.0 issue
on Feb 9, 2015 at 9:39:47 pm

Have been using DVD A for at least 6 yrs and have always noticed that it never gets the file size right. But today my render is 3.45 GB and the audio AC3 file is 114 MB. The runtime is 1:21:00 and the VRB is max 8MB, avg 5.8MB, min 3MB. No menu.

The result is 3.451 GB m2v and 114 MB ac3. That should fit, right? Well no it doesn't.

DADA says its 5.2GB and wants to re-compress. Since when does 3.45GB + 114MB = 5.2GB ???

I know that the authoring process takes some extra space even on a no menu DVD... but a full GB ??

I came up with my render settings using Mark's Bit Rate Calculator. I was very conservative on my runtime adding 10 mins, and made my render settings intentionally lower than the calculated optimum. and it's still .5 gb too large!

I've never complained about this stuff before but seriously, what's the story here?

Do you have DVD Architect Pro 5.2? That was the most stable version for me. 6.0 had quite a few "quirks" if I remember correctly.

Thanks for getting back to me John. 5.2 was removed when I installed 6. I had already thought of that actually and was ready to go looking for the older version. But then I got to thinking about it.

I did discover the issue. I had shot all my material in 24P and edited my material in 24P. The keep the 24P look I had decided to render the m2t file in 24P. But DVDA doesn't really support 24P per-say.
So when I imported that into DVDA, the 3.5 GB file with 24 frames per sec. was necessarily recalculated at 29.97 and accordingly got bigger. I should have rendered at 23.976 + 2-3 pulldown.

Hope I explained that correctly. So I re-rendered with 23.976+2-3 pulldown and the imported file size approx equals the file size shown in DVDA.

It should be pointed out that if you don't want DVD Architect to re-encode your video, you should stick to the MPEG2 templates with "DVD Architect" in the name and not change them. The DVD Architect 24p NTSC video stream template would have done exactly what you needed.

Agreed, my bad. I hadn't used DVDA in a while and started with the "DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream" then "customized the template" and changed the frame rate to "23.976". I should have selected the 23.976 + 2-3 pulldown, or used the "DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream" from the get go. Oh well, live and re-learn.

Thanks again for your help.
