Besides recording the audio right the first time, what audio effects can I use to minimize distortion on my audio track?

As always thanks so much to you guys...Johnny In Orlando

If the distortion is from digital clipping you could try using the DeClipper in iZotope RX4. There is also an option in Sound Forge to restore clipped peaks which sometimes works. Vegas Pro has nothing so you'll need to use other software to do this.

Audition 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 all have a pretty good restoration tool for clipping. Depends on the severity of the clipping of course. But Audition has saved my bacon a few times with customer supplied tracks.

John's answer gave you excellent tools to use after the initial recording.

Are you having specific problems that would cause you to ask this question?
There are a number of different ways that your source audio could end up distorted so more detailed questions would help us to help you.

Working in Vegas, but I have Audition which I didn't think of. Recorded line feed with microphone setting on camera. Stupid mistake for someone with my experience.

[John Perez] "Recorded line feed with microphone setting on camera."
Ouch! Honest mistake but massive over-modulation which leads to digital clipping. Good luck with that. Let us know what worked.
