on Feb 2, 2015 at 2:58:56 pm

Hi,
Does Vegas Pro 13 support USB 3.0 HDMI capture dongle ?

I'm about to buy this buddy:
http://www.magewell.com/hardware/dongles/xi100dusb-hdmi/xi100dusb-hdmi_feat...

I browsed a lot on the web and could'nt find any tech support about USB 3.0 capture using VP13..

Any clues ?
Thanks.

I don't know what you mean here by Capture, but VP only uses FireWire to capture.

Hi Grazie,

I just found this video:

It shows how to capture (and record) an external HDMI video signal
thru a USB 3.0 capture dongle made by Avermedia.

It works.

I have also used a Blackmagic Decklink to capture video live via USB3.

Please explain where that "video stream" is coming from?

Cheers

The HDMI video signal (stream) could come from a HD camera
with a live HDMI output or from one of my PC HDMI output cables.
It doesn'nt matter. That HDMI signal will feed my Magewell HDMI
to USB3.0 capture dongle, be read and sent to my PC thru USB3.
My question was:
Is VP13 able to record (capture) that HDMI signal from the Magewell
dongle and if it does what are the menu steps to get that HDMI
captured ?

My guess is probably not. Capture does not seem to be a focus of attention in Vegas these days because cameras have moved away from tape. For tape users, many are using third party applications to perform the capture function. I, for example, use HDVSplit to capture HD video from a Canon XH-A1. I know you are talking about streaming rather than tape, but I'm guessing that Vegas capture is still tape oriented.

I am interested to know if this will work.
When I used the Blackmagic card to capture with Vegas, we were just using a composite video input(with stereo audio) rather than a high resolution HDMI signal.
It doesn't look like you'll get an answer here, so maybe speak to the manufacturers directly.
Good luck

I'm about to get my Magewell HDMI to USB3 dongle
by mail early next week and I'll keep you informed
of what I learned.

Here is a very detailed resume of what I experienced
in my tests using Magewell HDMI to USB3 dongle :

Now I have 2 capture devices connected to my Win 8.1 PC:
- DV firewire capture device (Canopus ADVC-100, 4:3 format)
- Magewell HDMI to USB3

Inside Sony Vegas Pro 13:

I connected the dongle to one of my readily available USB3.0 port, Inside Vegas Pro 13:
To start capturing, in the top menu I selected File/Capture Video

A window shows up and ask for a video capture format:
DV or (HDV or SDI)

If I select HDV a popup window shows up
and in the small capture screen it is written "Device Not Available"
so I close it. (Nothing else can be done here..)

If I get back to File/Capture Video and I choose DV

The device showing is my Canopus ADVC-100 4:3 DV capture device which has always worked..

So I discovered this:
Still in the Sony Video Capture 6.0 main window, If I click the top menu "Video"
I can see the XI100DUSB-HDMI device and select it for the video capture.
The video capture properties option shows Color & Compression space:
RGB 24 selected (the other choice is YUY2) Output size 1920 x 1080 Images freq: 60.000

If I click the top menu "Audio" I can see the digital audio interface
(XI100DUSB-HDMI Audio) and select it for audio capture.
The capture audio format shows PCM @ 48,000khz, 16bits stereo.

Now after setting these options I can see the very nice HD image in the capture screen
in real time ---> but no sound.
In the 3 center tabs of the capture window (Capture, Advance Capture, Print to tape)
I click on the Capture tab.
Now I click on the "Capture video" button to start recording.
The recording process starts... I wait a few seconds then click stop recording.
A window shows up "Capture ended"
Details say:
Number of clip: 1
Lost images: 0
Session lenght: 00:00:06:28
Mean image freq.: 27,55 ips
Mean data stream: 163,42 Mbyte/sec.

I click the close button.

Then a CRASH popup window shows up still named "Sony Video Capture"
with the following message:
"An error happened during the following operation. An exception occured."
I click ok then a window pops up with the following message:
"Sony Video Capture stopped functionning."
So I clicked the Close program button..

Hmmmmm...
The created file is around 6 seconds in duration and has a file size of 1.156 gigabytes
Neither Sony Vegas Pro 13 nor VLC multimedia player is able to open the generated file..

But the file properties show:
Video:
image size: 1920 x 1080
data stream: 1576501 Kbits/s
Total stream: 1578037 Kbits/s
Images freq: 29 frames/s
Audio:
1536 Kbits/s
2 channels stereo
Sampling rate: 48khz

But I cannot open this video file with any program..

After a while of tweaking I discovered this:
Still in the Sony Video Capture 6.0 window, If I click the top menu "Video"
I can see the XI100DUSB-HDMI device and select it for the video capture.
The video capture properties option shows Color & Compression space:
--> If I choose YUY2 <-- instead of RGB 24 with Output size 1920 x 1080 and Images freq: 60.000
--> I can play the video file BUT...
--> The image is upside down and there is no sound <--.
even if I clicked the top menu "Audio", selected digital audio interface (XI100DUSB-HDMI Audio)
for audio capture.

I tried at least 87 different apps to capture the USB dongle 1920x1080 stream..
So far none of them capture & encode as desired..

Videolan VLC can capture the dongle HDMI input but
when I view the final captured file the image is upside-down !!

So from there could someone suggest me an 'cleap & easy to use' program
that would capture in real time from this USB dongle AND encode the incoming stream
to a specific format to be used afterward with BVegas Pro 13 to be edited ??

In fact what is the best video/audio format to encode to,
to be used by Sony Vegas Pro 13 ??

Thanks.
