Dark flashes when rendered for DVD
on Jan 3, 2015 at 12:50:18 am

I have a video recorded 59.94fps HD and looks fabulous when rendered as an mpg 25mbs Blu-ray. However, when I render using the Mainconcept DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen template, the video flashes occasionally (flashes a completely black screen randomly a few times per minute). Any idea why and how to avoid? I would've guessed that rendering video for both Blu-ray and dvd is a common task - but I'm stumped, I've tried dozens of render settings and the dvd always looks horrible.

What version of Vegas Pro? This is a known bug in some versions.

Try turning off GPU Acceleration under Options | Preferences | Video

I've had this. I tried all the usual suspects but the only remedy was to create a digital intermediary and proceed that to MPG2. It has been a total nightmare.

GPU on/off for me made no difference.

OK, please submit further, evidence-based request: Is your initial footage Interlaced? If yes, bring the dodgy rendered mpeg2 file into Vegas and then expand the timeline around the "black-flash". What do you see?

This is the GOOD Frame (the '50s wallpaper-look oval I've overlay-ed to protect the privacy!):

And now here is the BAD Frame which produces the BLACK flashes on Play back. Note the mangled INTERLACE fields, and THAT right there is producing the BLACK Flash. You can see the appearance of an INVERTED Field within the SAME frame. Bizarre.

MC MPEG, imho, is creating the issue.

LAGARITH does not create the issue. Perfect frame continuity. It is from this LAGARITH that I then create my MC MPEG for DVD preparation, which is perfect.

a) GPU on/off makes no difference to BAD Frames.

b) No Plugins present at frame mangle.

c) RAM set at 200mb.

A well known issue for older versions of Vegas.
Try rendering it out in a Quicktime format, then
drop it back on the timeline and render out to your
usual Mainconcept DVD format and see.
Not the best workflow but a solution maybe.

Steve, I'm using the latest version of Vegas. Are you suggesting this has returned? As I said, the only solution for me was also a digital intermmediat.

[Graham Bernard] "As I said, the only solution for me was also a digital intermmediat."
Yea, that may have been how I solved it as well. I think I rendered my project to a different format and then made the MPEG2 file from that. Totally frustrating.

I tell you what is frustrating, or rather inept, is that we don't have a way forward through the s/w engineers to create a solution.

Tell you what the solution WILL be - the final demise of the DVD. Maybe the engineers know this, and, like reluctant mourners have turned their collective backs to the Gurney carrying the DVD corpse.

Welcome the downloaded, streamed file and the Heavenly iCloud.

[Graham Bernard] "I tell you what is frustrating, or rather inept, is that we don't have a way forward through the s/w engineers to create a solution."
Part of the problem might be that Sony licensed the MPEG2 encoder from MainConcept and then MainConcept was bought by a company and sold and then bought my another company that really doesn't care if the MPEG2 encoder works or not. (just speculation but it seems to be what has happened)

As you say, John, "just speculation". In which case we all need to apply this deeper insight when a similar questionable render outcome is being written here, on this Forum.

If it is true that the QA ball has been dropped by those involved, we need to create those DI when needed, or better yet just add it to the VP >>> DVDA workflow and let the Devil take the hindmost.

Wow - this is crazy-making, isn't it?

Thank you all SO MUCH for your help. I've finally gotten a good render, although I'm baffled by the process.

Here's the gist:
Original footage was 1080p 59.94fps AVC. I'm trying to render for DVD.

Vegas Pro 12:
Everything fails: GPU on - fails. GPU off - fails. MC mpg2 interlaced or progressive render - all combinations fail. Intermediate format of any kind, followed by Mainconcept mpg2 -- fail.

Vegas Pro 13:
Same as above, every possible combination fails EXCEPT..... turn off the GPU acceleration and voilla -- a great clean render.

I'm baffled. Is this specific to my GPU (NVidia quadro k4000)?

Oh well, I got the results I need and I am grateful for your help.

Cheers!

Glad you got it working. Unfortunately GPU acceleration has been the cause of many render problems. :(

And again, turning GPU on or off made no difference what so ever. I still got black flashes regardless. And again I'd like to see the frames explored by our colleague.
