Shimmering and Flickering problem
on Dec 24, 2014 at 2:40:55 pm

I filmed a Christmas Pageant in 59.94P 28Mbps AVCHD, and rendered it as DVDArch WS Video Screen and had properties set as shown below:

The problem is that I am getting some shimmering and flickering during slow camera moves. Is this some sort of interlace issue I don't know how to resolve? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

Have you tried to disable resample on the events that flicker? Vegas Pro isn't very good and going from 60p to 60i and this could be the reason. Try it on a small section and see.

Just tried that and still looks the same. Also tried checking reduce interlace flicker and no change. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Can you post a small section of the video where it's flickering so we can see for ourselves? Just us the video upload button so that we can download it and see.

That's a typical interlace problem with very thin lines. It's a limitation of interlaced video. The problem is that the lines are one scan line thin and as the odd and even scan lines are displayed, they flicker on and off. Try rendering progressive 24p and they should disappear.

If want to deliver 29.97 and you have already enabled "Reduce Interlace Flicker" then you can try adding a Gaussian Blur with just 0.002 in the vertical direction. This blurs the thin lines so that they occupy more than one scan line and reduces the flickering.

I've never rendered progressive 24p, how do I do that? I need the final output to be standard DVD's for parents to play on their home DVD players.

Also, I looked at the Gaussian Blur filter and can't see how to make it just 0.002 in the vertical direction. It wants to go up to 0.10, 0.20, etc.

Should have checked further before that last post. I tried rendering that section in 24p and it definitely cleared it up. I will try to render the whole project that way and it looks like that will solve the problem. Thanks so much for you help, John and hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

Glad you found the 24p template. Just check that the motion isn't jerky when going from 60p to 24p.
