Explorer Not Showing Files Nor Folders

Hi Everyone:

Has anyone ever had this issue? When I select Explorer the box comes up empty; no folders nor files are shown. I rebooted and reopened and the same issue occurred.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Debbie

Hello Debbie,

'No folders, no files' as you wrote. But do you see the storage driver? Can you embed a screenshot?

Here's a print screen.

Many thanks,

What happens if you click the button that looks like two arrows pointing down (chevron) next to the empty path dialog (long empty rectangle)? Do you get a choice of drives? I suspect one of your drives is not responding quickly and it is not displaying anything until it gets a response from all the drives in your system. Is there an external drive you were using or I wonder if it was related to that combo BluRay device you were asking questions about. There is also a chance it is trying to bring back the last drive/path you used with that explorer dialog and it is having trouble finding it (i.e. a removable drive). Maybe one of these hints will get you a little closer to the solution.

Hi Mark and Francis:

Thank you so much for responding.

I cannot see anything, but when I click the folder icon above, it opens the explorer for me to see and select files. I can only see the files if I click that folder icon. Nothing shows in Vegas.

Many thanks.

Best,

Debbie

It looks like the panel where the drives and folders would be displayed to navigate is collapsed (hidden from view). To the left where you see the Name column, can you hover your mouse over that vertical line and see if the mouse cursor changes to the two arrows pointing opposite ways and drag that line (frame boundary) to the right to expose the navigational panel? It should look similar to my screenshot.

Debbie, I agree with Mark's proposal. Probably you have a hardware problem (connection) and the SV doesn't see the proper drive. It seems to me this is not the fault of the SV.

Debbie,
if you still have this problem, here's a couple of debugging tips:
Find the Folder where your start-up information is logged. On my box this is: C:\Users\zthom\AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas Pro\13.0

where you need to replace "zthom" with your username. Also replace "13.0" with your version - "12.0" ?

In that folder there are two files of interest:
FileExplorer.log This contains a line for each startup. For example:

======== 1/11/2015 12:22:22 PM: Created Window Successfully
======== 1/13/2015 12:00:55 AM: Created Window Successfully

The above are successful startups, perhaps yours has some error information there?

IF there are reports of problems there look at file FileExplorer.settings . Whatever you do don't edit/change this, perhaps copy it to another file. Then have a look. On my box this contains:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<FileExplorerSettings xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<View>List</View>
<ShowRegions>false</ShowRegions>
<ShowSummary>true</ShowSummary>
<ShowTree>true</ShowTree>
<ShowAllFiles>false</ShowAllFiles>
<CurrentPath>Computer\M:\Richkids\Renders</CurrentPath>
<AutoPlayModeOn>false</AutoPlayModeOn>
<LeftSideWidth>195.5*</LeftSideWidth>
<RightSideWidth>314.5*</RightSideWidth>
<RightTopHeight>3*</RightTopHeight>
<RightBottomHeight>0</RightBottomHeight>
</FileExplorerSettings>

Your file should look much the same except should be different.

Check that it is not pointing to a device that is no longer on your system (perhaps you used and then removed a USB drive).

Was this problem ever sorted? I am experiencing exactly the same issue. I have followed all of the instructions above, to no avail.

Hi,
did you manage to find the Settings file?

View > Windows Layouts > Default Layout ??

Have you got the very latest software? Plenty of free disk space on all relevant drives?

Has you drive layout changed recently?

Is this a new install ?

Was it all ok and then suddenly something happened? if so what was that?

I've tried to reproduce the problem but had no luck so far.

Hi Mark,

In response to your questions:

"did you manage to find the Settings file?"

Yes. I tried changing the path and I tried deleting it.

"View > Windows Layouts > Default Layout ??"

Yes. I also tried moving the explorer window around, docking and undocking it in different locations.

"Have you got the very latest software? Plenty of free disk space on all relevant drives?"

Yes. I also tried rolling back to a previous build.

"Has you drive layout changed recently?"

No, it hasn't.

"Is this a new install ?"

No, it isn't.

"Was it all ok and then suddenly something happened? if so what was that?"

Yes, except the 'suddenly' took place between me using Vegas and then using it again a few weeks later, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what I did that may have caused it. It's possible (if not likely) that the period between it working and not working was the period during which I upgraded to Windows 10, but I suspect that I am not the only person using Windows 10 and Vegas yet there doesn't seem to be a general uproar about this.

"I've tried to reproduce the problem but had no luck so far."

From my web searches and forum reads I have gathered that this isn't a common problem. It's happened to a few other people, none of which has been able to pinpoint the cause. No workable solution has been found on any of the forum threads regarding it, either.

Thanks for your efforts, though. I do appreciate it.

Hi David,

One for Sony I think.

Did you try the refresh button on that panel ?

When you did the upgrade, did you let microsoft change your account to a microsoft account? or are you still on a local account?

cheers
mark

I had that exact problem when I migrated from a HDD to a SSD on my Dell T3500. Explorer worked on all my other Sony software, i.e., Acid, SprectraLayer Pro, but not Vegas...but that instance is probably related to my drive replacement and since you haven't made any hardware changes then my experience won't matter. Like you though, I'm just hoping someone finds an answer. Until then I've returned to the original HDD. I did install an SSD on my HP mobile workstation with no problems when using Vegas. Interesting!

You've returned to your original HDD? That's dedication!

I love my SSD and given a choice between that and continuing to use Vegas, I'd just start honing my Premiere Pro skills (which I am doing at the moment). I figure that any time lost learning a new program will be made up for not having to watch my computer or programs take forever to start up.

Hi Mark,

I'm not getting anything on the Sony forums, either.

I can't recall any requests to change accounts during the upgrade to Windows 10 so as far as I know that hasn't changed.

In regards to the refresh button on the panel itself, I'll upload a screen shot for your amusement. This is what I'm looking at:
