How does Vegas uses my systems RAM for Dynamic RAM Preview?
on Dec 8, 2014 at 1:04:33 pm

Hi all,

I have Sony Vegas 12 64 bit Build 770, and I'm running Win 7 64 bit on an SSD. I have an i7 4790 and am running with 16 Gb GSkill Ripjaws 1600 RAM.

In Vegas's Preferences > Video, under 'Dynamic RAM Preview max (MB)' I had it set to 4096 because I like to be able to do fairly large selective RAM renders of the timeline. With 16 Gb it's fine as long as I'm only running a couple instances of Vegas max, and a few background programs. But if I try to open say 4 instances of Vegas, Win Task Mgr shows the RAM usage maxes out. Vegas then freezes and I have to End Process in Task Mgr. So I reduced the 'Dynamic RAM Preview max (MB)' to 3072 and that seems to be pretty stable so far.

But this got me wondering how Vegas reserves the amount of RAM I've selected. Let's say I've selected 3 Gb. If I have 3 instances of Vegas open has Vegas then reserved 9 Gb of my total system RAM that is now completely unavailable to any other programs running? Or does it depend on whether the instances of Vegas are actually active windows? In addition, is that amount of Dynamic RAM Preview reserved only for RAM preview? Or will Vegas adjust and use as much system RAM as needed for editing and such until I then go to do a preview?

So I'm unclear on this. If anyone could enlighten me, or point me to an article that explains it I'd be grateful.
Thanks,
Tim

From what you have described, it sounds like it's reservered regardless of whether Vegas Pro is active or not. That's not up to Sony, that's up to the OS (in this case Windows) to efficiently manage the memory that programs have requested.

It is dedicated for RAM Preview and ONLY RAM Preview! This is why Sony warns you when you set it too high. You are stealing memory away from timeline editing and rendering. I know people who reset their RAM Preview down to zero before they render because of this behavior.
