Format, cropping, and pixel management.

While i'm waiting for some stuff to get rendered i've been pondering something that just occurred to me could have done differently...

A simplified situation would be; working with 1080 video on a project set to 1080 but with intention of doing the final render at 720. Now, in that video i'd like to crop some bits of footage to 720 while conserving the original pixels in the final render. (I'll come back to that in a second)

So from what i can see of that cropped footage, it may seem that when i crop them to a 720 frame size Vegas adds extra pixels to make it 1080 (bad), and then when i do the render at 720 Vegas discards pixels to reduce the size (double bad).

The reason i did that is that i 'thought' if i set the project at 720 then Vegas would discard pixel on importing, and not only be degradation of quality during processing but also those 1080-cropped-to-720 clips would become 720-cropped-to-480-enlarged-to-720.

But, i found some threads about filming in 4k and then cropping to HD, so that probably means i was wrong all along.

So, if i had set the project at 720 (like i've seen mentioned that you should set the project to the projected output settings, but i had already started...) Would Vegas have kept all the original pixels and only resize on rendering? So if i had cropped a 1080 frame into 720 it would simply have discarded the pixels outwith the frame and kept the full original screen quality?

Cheers

Yes, that's correct. If you crop 1080 footage in a 720 project to 720, Vegas Pro will use the original pixels and not resize anything.

Ok, cheers. Now i'll know for the next time. May give it a try setting a small project for those clips and then inserting them into a final render project set at 720.

Thanks again :-)
