Can't Render - Invalid Device Error

Hi,

I just installed a trial version of Sony Movie Studio on a Win7 64 bit i5 machine with 12GB ram.

Am unable to render files. Couldn't even render Sony's sample video provided in their tutorial per tutorial instructions.

Here's the error:
Warning: An error occurred while creating the media file Consequence-ac3.
An invalid device was specified
The record device  does not support the current input format.

I'd try other file formats but since it won't even render the tutorial file, suspect it has something to do with installation (although I received a message saying it installed successfully) or software conflict.

I couldn't find anything in Sony's knowledge base. Your suggestions appreciated.

You are trying to render to Dolby Digital AC3 but that is not enabled in the trial because it requires a license. Try a different format like PCM Wave file.

Hi John,

Thanks for your prompt reply!

Rebooting solved the problem. When publishing to DVD, Movie Studio encodes audio to .ac3 by default. It's not a problem any more.

Sorry, if this was sort of a dumb problem. I guess I was misled into thinking it was more involved after seeing that a number of other Vegas users posted the same elsewhere on the inet. Nobody ever bothered to fess up about the solution though.

I'll try to come back with something more substantial next time.

Bill

Glad you figured it out. I didn't think AC3 encoding was included with the trial. Now I know. ;-)

John,

Sony Movie Studio DVD publishing audio format options:

  • When choosing to publish to stand alone DVD, pcm only.
  • When choosing to publish to DVD with menus, ac3 only.

I don't understand why that's the case. Do you?

Bill

Sorry, those audio settings are only the defaults for the wizard. Advanced rendering offers a slew of formatting options.

Yea, I'm not sure why it's restricting you to PCM when not using menus but rendering manually gives you more control as you have seen.
