Convert 5d mark iii footage to Edit with Vegas Pro 12

Hello,

I have to edit a concert shot with 3 5D's make iii's.
It's better to convert them into a more friendly format right?

Which convertors do you recommend? Free would be nice, but I am willing to pay if that makes makes a big difference.
It's a lot of files so Batch Option would be a priority.

Thanks in advance
j

Why can't you just edit them in their native format? Aren't the files it spits out .mov files? I edit MOV files regularly with no issues.

It's been reported here and elsewhere that Vegas does not handle large numbers (50 or more as I recall) of MOV files very well.
If that's the case, my suggestion is to convert them to MXF which Vegas handles easily.
Use the Batch Render script built into Vegas to transcode multiple numbers of files.

Well, I have started to edit with the native format. So far so good.

Hi Mike,

What MXF settings do you recommend for Canon DSLR footage?

Thomas, I'm not at my computer right now so my apologies if I mess this up. I would use the MXF EX HD 1920 X 1080 setting.

Vegas handles video files from my 5D II without a problem, but I have not used large numbers of clips. The comments about a 50 file ceiling, and the workaround using Vegas are well taken.

Why not just edit them as they are. There is a talked about issue
with having more than 50 on the timeline, But i've never had that
issue.

You can edit the MOV files directly. Vegas bypasses Quicktime for typical DSLR MOV files, Canon included, and decodes these directly with its own internal decoders. The 50 file Quicktime issue does not apply.

Thank you.
I am editing as they they are. Sometimes vegas gets slow but I can work with that.
Let's see what happens when I start throwing plugins around.
cheers
